Bad ref decisions - for and against - season 2025/26

1) The “double underhook”
Putting both arms under and around the striker from behind isn’t normal jostling anymore—it’s holding. Even before the ball hits the hand, that action alone is a foul.

2) The hand/arm contact
By reaching around like that, the defender’s arms are in a very unnatural position. So when the ball hits the hand and gets knocked away, referees will usually see that as handball, even if it’s accidental, because:

  • the arm is making the body bigger
  • the arm is being used in a risky/unnatural way
  • it directly prevents the attacker from controlling the ball
Under the Laws from FIFA, either offence is enough. Together, they make the decision even clearer.
