Back Four For The Derby

Amidst all the insanity of the window I thought it best to start a thread concerning something other than how fat McGeady is and see what other blues thoughts are in relation to our best back four for the derby providing all defenders are fully fit.

For me I feel the only two definite starters are Coleman and Jagielka, after that I think it could go a couple of ways, although Martinez will likely start with Distin and Baines I'm not so sure that would be wise.
I don't think the derby has ever been particularly successful for either of these two players and whether it be playing the occasion or just letting past mistakes haunt you I feel that this is the side of the pitch the RS will target and expect us to put out.

If fit I would line up with Coleman, Jagielka, Alcaraz, Oviedo. I believe Alcaraz will have had more experience dealing with players of LS style for Paraguay and I feel would not lose his head anytime LS goes anywhere near him this would leave Jags to worry about an effective but fairly one dimensional Sturridge. As for Oviedo I feel with his performances against MU and Arsenal he has shown that he is not fazed by the big games and for me deserves his chance to influence the game.

If we defend well, we win the game.

Thoughts Blues?

I think everyone knows what the derby line-up will be tbh, provided everyone is fit, (excluding Kone and Gibbo obvs).

Distin and Jagielka are his first choice 2, it seems. I presume Distin will be fully fit by the derby, so they'll more than likely play. Stones is the natural successor to Jagielka and is dependable. Alcaraz is also a very dependable, although he may not always be fit.

Baines is the best left back in the world IMO and despite Oviedo having played really well when needed, you cant not select someone as good as Baines.

Coleman is great., best rb in the league right now.

Therefore, the defence (barring further injury and suspension) will likely be Baines Distin Jagielka Coleman. This defence is definitely in the top 3 in the league.

I think that back four is decent in most games, the only point I was trying to make was that it doesn't necessarily lend itself to derby games. Not a Distin hater by any means but every derby I always get the feeling he is going to make a hash of something when put under pressure.

To be honest I think we need to try something different to neutralize Suarez, and Alcaraz could be that player. Roberto said that South Americans are used to marking players one on one. It's a big ask, but we haven't been able to contain him in the last couple of derbies with Jags/Distin.

The defence cost us the win last time, I'm yet to see Distin have a good derby, rat face tears him apart everytime

Coleman Stones Jags Baines

I'd be tempted to go Alcaraz over Jags as well, total f******g football

That's really what I was trying to say but better summed up mate. Isn't insanity doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results? Distin will be a marked man.

**** defence, lets go for it with:

Stones
Coleman Barry Baines
Mirallas Pienaar Barkley McCarthy Deulofeu
Lukaku Vellios

Keep it like we did in the first half vs Arsenal for the whole match and we'll bum them.
