I'd love some of you blokes to go into the mental health thread and say that single men are ineligible for any help and should just man up.
My experience, such as it is, is that Albanian men come to the UK because of either promises of work to then be trafficked or are directly trafficked here.

It's men specifically because they can work - car washes, meat processing, hospitality.

Women were brought here either for benefit fraud or prostitution or both.

Quite a heavy Albanian organised crime presence across the North West and London.

And yet there seems to be an argument here that people who have been trafficked are not only not victims but are actually criminals themselves. It's utterly mindblowing.

I am trying to find the article, but it was a long detailed piece on the problems Albania is suffering economically which drives folk to look to leave for opportunities, often via extreme means. Chuck in gangs exploiting people it is a bit of a sorry mess.

The same article indicates the UK is popoular in part because of the strong links to Albania post-balkan conflict. Family, language and unfortunately gangs here (for those being exploited).

I will try and sniff it out, it is a thoughtful piece.

The opposite from the intended application of the Modern Slavery Act.
A while back (pre 2004) the other half was helping out at a shelter and a girl heard her name and started talking to her. She was Czech and had come here on the promise of work after responding to an ad. She had her passport taken off her and was effectively a prisoner. If she didn't work she'd be homeless and she couldn't go home both due to a lack of money and out of shame. I suspect we can all agree that the best course of action would be to send her to Rwanda.

I suppose on the plus side, at least she wasn't a man as then she'd be expected to turn into Liam Neeson and kick ass to free themselves.

Not at all uncommon. But yes, under MSA she'd be considered a victim, under new legislation a criminal.

No idea, apparently France and the U.K. are the top destinations…
That is true, I know some Albanians (and Kosovans, - they speak the same language) through Sécours Catholique in our local town. A couple with a grown up daughter and two women with young children.
They don't speak English, they are learning French.
One of the younger women has a man in England, she doesn't want to go there because "he doesn't have nice friends".
A reason why England is popular with the menfolk, it seems that "no papers no problem" seems to be an attraction.
I'll ask them why they came to France at my next visit to the language group in a couple of weeks time.

She has stood down

A shame that Refuge decided to play it down in the first instance and even more of a shame that Fiona Bruce made them offer an explanation rather than just resigning.

In a statement, Bruce said she will be leaving her role "with real sadness".
She added that her words has been "mischaracterised" in a "social media storm".

_______

Bruce then interrupted and told Ms Alibhai-Brown and the audience: ‘I’m not disputing what you’re saying, but just so everyone knows what this is referring to, Stanley Johnson’s wife spoke to a journalist, Tom Bower, and she said that Stanley Johnson had broken her nose and that she’d ended up in hospital as a result.

‘Stanley Johnson has not commented publicly on that. Friends of his have said it did happen but it was a one-off.’
