Aston Villa / Keith Wyness

Looking at situations such as Villa, Sunderland, Leeds etc you'd suggest that relegation clauses be mandatory (backed by league rules) for all player contracts and at something like the level of 25% or less of original wages. Might make some of the lazy beggars on the pitch care a bit more as well.

Can't ever see it happening mind as the "big six" wouldn't want anything that may put off the big names signing for them from abroad.

Something rotten in the game though where a relegation to one league lower can threaten the very existence of a previously well established club.

However the RS could go out of business tomorrow as far as I'm concerned.

Newcastle fans will be doing cartwheels at this news - what goes round will be their cry - they found Villa less than gracious in their relegation season under Shearer. It’ll be a long hard road back if it’s as serious as some of the comments suggest. Shows how damaging relegation can be.

We have come so close to this twice in relatively recent times, but for the grace of Segers & good fortune this could have been us. I won’t be rubbing any Villa fans nose in anything, there’ll be enough of that from Geordie bellends to make up for anyone who thinks they are missing out. What happens next is anyone’s guess at this stage. Not sure Trevor Birch is always the right man to go to in such situations though, surely there are other options....let’s see.

Our local rivals are loving it, especially the blue half of the city. Your neighbours seem to be enjoying it too. They can't stand us, and the feeling is mutual.

I think the money difference between the Premier League and the Championship is now so big that not even parachute payments can make up for the losses. Knowing this, clubs go for expensive “proven PL talent” to try and stay up which breaks them when they don’t. There’s also been a small rash of foreign investors who seem to lose interest when their team gets relegated and they have to dig into their own pockets.

Will be interested to see how Fulham and Cardiff behave in the market. Seems the teams that survive the drop are the ones who don’t lose their heads when they come up in the first place. Like Bournemouth or Huddersfield, if either of them went down next season they’d be fine.

Forgot this earlier... the parachute payments used to be paid out over 4 years and now it’s 3. Makes teams that drop even more desperate to gamble the way Villa did. Figures the only team that’s got away with this gambit so far has been Newcastle.

Looking from the outside looks like they will have to sell Grealish quickly, more than likely have to take a low bid to get it done quickly, and any other players they can get out of the door,( funny Villa haven't got any kids they always seemed to have one or two decent ones coming through).
If Wynless has been looking at investment overseas it suggests they also need a change of owner, could see them getting sold, big club , good history if the owner is realistic on the sale price, dont know anything about him to say how he will react.
Its different wanting clubs to go down ect , than actually disappear only club i wish that on is over the park, not even Newcastle really who are worth keeping around for comedy value alone.

I always liked Villa, loved Villa Park one of my favourite away grounds, I remember all the great games we had against them win, lose and draw and its sad that they have ended up like this but if we're honest that could easily have been us. With bringing in Brands and Silva we now seem to be heading in the right direction but football will never be like it was in days gone by, the money is ridiculous and Villa basically played poker on one season and lost, looks like another Rangers to me. Reading last night of their liabilities, how they have been bank rolled by the owner to the tune of £5m each month but since the play off final that's stopped. They're in real trouble. Great club, great supporters.

So that Xia was just all talk? Wanted to rake in the fortune from a gamble
Of getting into the prem I presume?
It was **** or bust with that play off game. Apparantly Wyness had a meeting a few weeks back with Xia and some others. He came out of the meeting and said to whoever it was " Losing the play off final is not an option" . By getting promoted it would have sorted out debt out. The problem then would have been would we have been able to bring enough quality in to survive in the prem. We know Xia was getting 4-5m every month being pumped into the club from china to help with the finances, but that stopped two month ago. We don't know what wealth he has, or what's available, but as everyone knows, it's not easy getting your money out of China. We nearly went bump in the late 60s, but managed to get saved. We ended up on the third division for a couple of years. That was the start of a revolution at the club which saw big crowds home and away, and a rise up the leagues which saw us win two league cups in 75, 77(sorry) . Then the rest is history as we went on to win the league and the big one. Can't see a club like Villa staying down for long. People might mention Leeds, but they have always been a yo-yo club. I'm sure we will eventually be ok.
