Confirmed Signing Ashley Young

I am concerned about how his body holds up injury wise, but it needs to be said. Some people REALLY take care of their bodies. Some people keep their athleticism til they’re mid to late 30’s (rare but it happens). Let’s judge him on his performances and not his age. I think that is fair.

He is a solid professional and is probably the best cover we could have gotten because he can play all over the place and will be one of the best backups in the squad in all likelihood. He can start and we probably won’t miss a beat. If we get the 2-3 signings in (Danjuma incoming already), then he was a good signing. As others have said though, he shouldn’t be used as an excuse to not sign more.

….I think lots depends on how physically competitive players are. It wasn’t a surprise that Tim Cahill’s body just gave up after years of combative performance in this league. I don’t see Young as the combative type and he’s clearly kept himself in great shape.

Especially those games upfront, pyhsios talk about the impact on strikers bodies when jumping with a 14 stone CB on their back, Cahill was doing that on top of the heavy on the joints demands of midfield.

And on top of being on injections/painkillers pretty much all the time in his last years with us. Won't be surprised to hear that after he quit football he had to rehab for a full year after to be honest - tasking as you say is one thing, but we absolutely obliterated him (or he did it for us, depending like...).

This signing reminds me of Paul Power, who was an inspired signing by Howard Kendall. Makes the squad stronger, just by being able to play in several positions.

The race to the Post Office bar with Ferguson after the final whistle wasn't the most effective warm down.
