Transfer Rumour Ashley Young

Some people on this site weren’t born when Ashley Young scored a 94th minute winner against us
Was in a pub in Sheffield watching this, me the only blue and with one solitary Villa fan the other side of the room. Went mad when we equalised and then Young the absolute bell went and did that. The Villa fan stood up and gave it the biggun. I didn’t know who to abuse more in that moment, Young or the fan, and did a garbled version of both. Nothing but hate attached to that memory.

So yeah Ashley Young on a free. Marquee signing if ever there was one.

Curiously uninterested whether we sign him or not.
Non event either way.
Looking at it logically we’re just a relegation haunted club with severe cash limitations, scrabbling round to reduce our spending and trying to reinforce our threadbare squad with cheap options.
Within that context Young would be reasonable acquisition.
Wont prevent us battling relegation again but may have the experience to help our survival for another season.
Which seems to be the limit of our planning.

Why don’t we sign Maitland-Niles like someone suggested then, who we would get more than 1 season out of and would be able to sell for a minimal fee if he turns out crap? Young will just need replacing next year. It’s a ridiculous piece of business that makes no sense whatsoever.

Its irrelevant what we want.

If Young fits the budget we're working with to cover a certain position (I assume LB) then the fans haven't a say in the matter and rightfully so.

Apparently he was solid for Villa last season - wouldn't be a terrible signing if its a free deal for 1-2 seasons.
Similar to Townsend for me even though he is a bit older, except he is more versatile, has more pace, and actually gets a run of games together.

On a free, he provides back up in several positions.

I’m not thrilled by it, but I see the logic behind it.

38 years old la

Genuinely think the club is trolling us at this point

Knowing us it was probably just a case of miscommunication. The conversation went something like this...

I think he will do a job for us, how old is Ashley?

Young?

Brilliant! I'll sign him up now.

We’re screwed aren’t we when we can’t even keep our kids…..

We can't have it both ways Pete. If we break the bank to give the kid what he would get at Chelsea we'll be paying someone who has no chance of getting in our team for a few years at least 30k a week. Then we'll bemoan our club for being a financial basketcase.

Sometimes you have to hold your hands up and say we aren't in a position right now to throw a 17 year old into the first team as there are too many question marks across the 11 to let someone learn on the job.

accept the position we're in. this is the market we're moving in, Young as a free transfer on a year deal. Can see Rodrigo coming in for >5mill and then the marquee signing will be Jack Harrison

A decade ago or even 5 years ago I'd be quite happy.

Mind you, I seem to recall us signing a 38yr old Richard Gough and him being alright.

I'm with @ForeverBlue92 here. He knows what is good for us. FB92 for DOF.

The problem is mate too many fans think they know better than people getting paid lots of money to do business.

Mikeh72 for example - thinks Pickford is a crap GK, thought Lampard was a good football manager & done nothing but slate McNeil & Doucoure last season - two of our ultimate best performers.

Make of that what you will about that fella's judgement - hence why I will judge Young on what he does on the pitch should he sign before wetting the sheets because self appointed oracles of the internet like to moan before milk has been spilt.
