Article on whether Everton can make top 4 by Martin Laurence

It seems like a close battle to me. Looking at the fixtures to play up to the half-way point (last games of 2015) I put Man U marginally ahead of City/Arsenal =2nd with Spurs 4th, Everton 5th, Leicester/RS =6th, Hammers 8th

Whenever we get our hopes up there is always a team of no hoper cloggers around the corner to trip us up and bring us back down to earth.

Is that not the same for all the top teams?

Arsenal came unstuck against Baggies.

City against the RS.

The RS themselves v Palace.

Chelsea against half a dozen such teams.

United have been fluking wins and scraping draws all season.....that luck is bound to run out.

Which leaves Spurs as my idea of top four and a realistic contender for the title itself, albeit their depth of squad might catch up with them.

There is no reason why we cannot claim a top four spot.

I think Leicester will struggle over the next few weeks, including the game against us. Once they start to slip I think they will find it hard to arrest the slide. If we are worried about Lukaku getting injured they must be paranoid about Vardy.
We have a run of very winnable fixtures which, all being well, will build confidence and set us up for the difficult games coming up after Christmas.
Hopefully we will keep all are players during the transfer window as we are not a selling club and maybe get in that play maker.
I would have been content with a cup and 8th place at the start of this season, I would now settle for a cup and top 6 this year. Provided we continue to improve next year.

Vardy can't score every game the rest of the year.

Honestly I'm always optimistic, but we do seem to have passed a tipping point in my mind. I see absolutely no reason not to think we can and will finish in the top 4, with the caveat of IF ROM DOES NOT GET HURT.

I asked in this humble forum at the beginning of the season, what was our ceiling if Rom, Ross, Gerry, and Stones all began to reach their potential on a consistent basis? We're seeing that now finally, and the results are there to see.

There's no excuse for not finishing above Spurs, Leicester, West Ham, Soton, and that other team the plays near Stanley Park - not with the squad we have now. Baines and Jags coming back from injury only makes us stronger and deeper.

Lads, if we're going to do this, this is the season with the hole Chelsea have dug for themselves.

There no single great team this year, so any teams that are consistently good will get a shot at the top spots.

Exactly.

And because we're Everton, the mighty fuking Toffees.

IF Chelsea win the CL, (and finish, 8th say) and IF we are 4th, Uefa rules allow 5 clubs from one country now dont they?

In other words, the "situation" we faced 10 years ago wont need to be repeated?

We could do with another prolific striker who can come straight into the team if Rom gets injured or as another option in a 4-4-2. Can't see us getting top 4 otherwise.
