today i really didn't think he was that [Poor language removed], he didn't give the ball away at all, the only problem is he's completely afraid to take any risks (probably because he's given the ball away so much recently). whenever he had the ball in the middle of the attacking side of the park, he'd try to play a simple short pass or hit neville on the wing, its like he didn't want to take responsibility at all.

i think it might be time to move him back out wide, and give pienaar a little break. at least when we used to play him there he would work hard, and send crosses in which he was pretty good at. when osman plays he generally has to play out of position, the only reason we stopped doing that for arteta is cos he was too good to be forced out of position. now that he's playing like a squad player, i see no reason not to throw him back out wide. it'd be nice to give coleman a bit of a rest and he runs 100% every game, and it would free up rodwell to play a bit more offensively.

Agreed. He should deputise for Coleman when we play Scunthorpe. Who'd have seriously suggested that a few months ago?

I thought he played ok tonight with pienaar and rodwell. it went a bit pear when rodwell was taken off. it should have been Cahill.

I dont think its a case of putting him out wide.....but the problem throughout the whole season is that Moyes doesnt want to, or know how to, create competition for places even though we have the players.

Pienaar should play in that central midfield role when Arteta's out IMO, then Osman. He's got Guyeue, Bilya, and Vic for the wings (at the moment).

So when Arteta's out, fill the hole, and make him fight for his place.

Cahill and Arteta are pretty much sacrosanct for Moyes. All managers have their blindspots with a certain player or two, I suppose

The only competition Moyes has tried to get off the ground this season was a Cahill v Rodwell head to head in the press, but he's avoided that decision by playing the two together.

Why is he a shadow of his former self?

He seems lightweight and a bit afraid.
Won't attack players or really do anything of any use.

Anyone got any ideas wants up with him cos at the minute I'd rather he didnt play.

i do have a theory ...... and that is lack of space in the center or another way of looking at it ... too many players in the same area.
cahill arteta fellaini and rodwell were all in and around the center circle today ..... its as if there job sharing at times.
even pienaar was cutting in there.

play him on either flank or in the center of a proper standard 442 and im sure we will see an improvement.

Wow! sometimes I wonder if we all watch the same game. Arteta didn't give the ball away as much as Neville but apart from one great delivery on a corner he was pathetic. Should have been the first subbed. Agree with the statement Moyes wouldn't dare do it so he won't lose anymore confidence. But his match sharpness and awareness isn't anything like it has been in the past.

But he's done the opposite with the strikers and moans about not scoring goals.

i think what people are getting at is when we broke the ball went to arteta , in front of him would be 4 west ham shirts and 3 blue shirts.
he would slow the ball down then cut back and pass the ball sideways to coleman for eg.then in front of the ball would be the same amount of blue shirts but 8 or 9 west ham players.
the sideways passing gives the opposing team time to get players back.
when arteta or anyone plays like that it is good for possesion and control , but isnt gonna win you games or goals due to the amount of players getting back into the opposing half/box.

Excellent observation and that is what is frustrating me. Not only sideways passing but his backward passing count those tonight. We gave a subpar defense time to muster the troops to be reinforced thus causing more time wasting and happy with a draw away from home tactics with a bottom side. I just don't get it.

I wish we could play a top four side every week we seem to show up for those games

He didn't particularly do anything bad or wrong, he was just very simple and unambitious in possession, which is very frustrating really. You can't really argue against Osman being given a go ahead of him at the moment. I wouldn't be against it.

Although saying that, I thought Moyes got the balance of the side completely wrong today. Arteta must have spent 65 minutes playing behind the striker, which is a massive waste really. Especially when Fellaini and Rodwell also make alot of short, simple passes. There's no connection there, and Rodwell's running power would have been much more suited to playing further forward. With Cahill upfront, you need to get as much pace around him as possible.

You can't build possession with one midfielder looking to collect the ball, it just doesn't work, Fellaini and Arteta should be online with each other, passing, moving and controlling the tempo of the game.

The balance between him and Fellaini as a middle two just isn't there yet, which is a shame as if they found it then we would have carte blanche to push on with two recognised strikers.

I did see Arteta trying to be more positive occasionally tonight and make a run into advanced positions to receive a pass but he just doesn't seem to have the mobility this season. He is too comfortable sat in front of the back four which unfortunately so is Fellaini, and Fellaini is more effective at it.
