I was on about @artetas_biggest_fan an ironic username really, considering that he liked a post disrespecting the man. The qualities he has are the qualities that Man City, deemed to be worthy enough for them to hire him as assistant manager.

Occupying the big chair is another kettle of fish. Being a top assistant is the usual pathway to getting into the big chair somewhere. More of them fail than not, and more managers that ascend the ladder to the larger jobs by succeeding in smaller ones fail than not.

I think we're getting to the point where it's reasonable to argue that Arteta's tenure this season has been a failure. I think he's getting a bit of a pass because the club remains the holder of major silverware, and because at least some of the problems are attributable to serial mismanagement by the operations side.

A record barely above .500, behind Tottenham, and dead in the water for European qualification would ordinarily get the manager sacked at a club like Arsenal. I think the silverware buys him the summer window and ten games or so next season. I also think he has to earn his job early next season, or face the sack the moment a major manager without Tottenham links becomes available.

A lot of other observers seem to think that the club will be more ruthless unless things change in a hurry.
