so that's about 5 jocko's in history that could've played for the mother country.

do we have that monopoly on all commonwealth citizens ? hong kong chinese that got passports ?

is it not different now that they have their own parliaments and can put scottish etc on documentation ?

Most Scots I know will put Scottish as their nationality rather than British, or Scotland than UK, even if it means they are filling it out wrong like for official visas or something.

That was meant to contribute in some way but I went off on a tangent, and a pointless boring one at that.

Superb news.

Incase anyone missed it... last week the Scottish FA brought up the fact that an agreement was signed in 2008 whereby no home-nation association can include players in that situation (acquiring British residency) into their national teams.

"Under the criteria put in place, only those who have a family bloodline or who have completed five years' education in one country can represent that nation at international level."

While I appreciate everyone's nervousness about him being around "them lot," if he can't play for England then in all likelihood he will never play in the World Cup. Chances of him getting into Spain for the next WC (when Fabregas can barely get a game) are extremely slim. I find it very hard to celebrate that one of the best Everton players I've ever seen play will never get the chance to experience the World Cup.

I doubt he'd play a WC anyway, won't he be 32 by then?

Yes. It means that Andrew Driver (I think), can't play for scotland, despite having been in the scottish education system for 4 years and something like 50 weeks.

Good news though. He'll play for spain one day. I reckon

Agreed. This has all been a ploy to push the spaniards into having a good look at him again. He's worth a squad place, and could be used as a sub with as much impact as what they have at the moment.

Never thought he should have played for Blighty but, my main concern is that there's a bitter taste left in the mouths of the Spanish selectors, and this little episode has soured any chance he might have had to play for Spain. IMHO, Mikel should have come out, categoricaly, and stated that he would play for Spain, and Spain alone.

Mikel said he'd consider the possibility of playing for England if they came to him and asked him, he didn't say he was a dead cert to play, nor was a begging to be selected. I doubt the Spanish team, whether they select him or not, will look down on his actions.

For his sake, I hope you're right.
