Arteta for England?

Everton and England never seems to work well in the modern game and usually ends up with Everton getting a rum deal by a player's head being turned a la Rooney, Barmby etc. Plus I fully agree that the minute he has one bad game the comic book that is the Sun will come up with a god awful headline like 'Arteta was SPAINful to watch and Capello should say Adios'. Still, he would improve the England side A LOT! I guess it is nothing new, Pieterson isn't English, Viera and Zidane both represented France, Giggs represented Wales, Owen for England and Lawrenson for Ireland. As it goes I don't think any of them were born in the countries they ended up playing for.

I think he'd be better off either trying to force his way into Spain's set up by continuing to perform at a high level for us or not playing internationally at all.

Perhaps he's realised - and this is my opinion - that no-one is going to be able to replace any member of the Spain side after the World Cup win, considering the tiresome veneration of the England 66 team even upto the present day. Perhaps he's just thought he'd like to play internationally just for the experience in his life.

If you look at the German side Ozil is Turkish, Cacau is Brazilian and both Klose and Podolski are Polish. The French World Cup winning side of 1998 contained several players who weren't born in France: Zidane (Algeria), Vieira (Senegal), Desailly (Ghana) and Thuram (Guadeloupe). The Republic of Ireland and Wales have been bolstering their national sides with English-born players for years.

In England's recent history there are numerous players who weren't born on these shores: Dorigo (Australia), Hargreaves (Canada), Barnes (Jamaica), Butcher (Singapore) and Rob Jones (Wales) to name a few.

Our rugby and cricket teams are not exactly pureblood British. We're not too proud to adopt Lennox Lewis as our own either.

At 28, Arteta is unlikely to make the breakthrough at international level with his country of origin, especially with Xavi, Iniesta, Alonso and Fabregas ahead of him and because successive managers have overlooked him. It would be a waste for a player of his talent not to grace the world's biggest stage. England aren't exactly blessed with a wealth of midfield talent. So, why not?

There may be more subtle gamesmanship at hand, however. Arteta may be trying to bluff Del Bosque into giving him a call up to block him representing England. It's a risky move, however, as the manager could give him just one cap to prevent Capello from being able to play him, and then not use him again.

Should Mikel pledge himself to the three lions, you'd expect it to benefit Everton. Arteta has the blessing of Gerrard, which would be invaluable in allowing him to break into the exclusive 'club England' fold. If he could establish himself in Capello's plans, it would draw greater attention to the likes of Baines, Jagielka, Rodwell and even Beckford.

Huge yolk lid?

I dont want any Everton player, playing for England English or Spanish untill melts like the "old-gen generation" arent playing, and its minus any Man Citeh players.

I like it!! I'm all for having a lot of our players in the England team, that way ours boys can tap up other players rather than being tapped up themselves.

Ok some fact checking in order...Ozil is of Turkish heritage - born and raised in Germany. Zidane - Alegerian parents. Born and raised in France. Viera - moved to France when he was 8. Grew up in France. Desailly's mother married a Frenchman and moved to France when he was 4. Thuram was born in Guadeloupe...which is part of France. Podolski was raised in Cologne. That's his home regardless of his parents nationality.

Arteta has nothing in common with these guys. They are all French or German either by birth or by having grown up there. Not the same.

A better example would be Marcos Senna for Spain. Me personally? I don't like it. Some things are sacrosanct. Playing for your country means playing for YOUR country. The place you grew up. The place you call home. The place you have citizenship.
