Saw it. Not a bad doc, though as you alluded to not much depth. The finish was good with the reversal of fortune for Zidane and Ronaldo (lesser extent Beckham...all he did was score a pen vs the Argies in ‘02 so not really a massive U turn).

I think a better one to focus on instead of Beckham would have been Owen. He had the world at his feet after that tournament...remember headlines of “50m to Lazio”. Within a year he had snapped his hamstring at Leeds, the surgery (which he states) was largely a failure in that ligaments were fused which restricted his running, and he was never the same player. He was never flat out after that, and rather than pick the ball up from midfield and run at people he largely became a player who operated in and around the penalty box. I maintain, had he played under Fergie, knowing how he looked after the similarly fragile hamstrings of Giggs by not overplaying him (pulling him out of every Wales friendly to boot), he’d have been in contention for the best player in the world. Houllier absolutely ruined him, playing him as he put his own need for results over the optimum long term physical health of the player.

Think Benitez did a similar thing to Torres too. Wouldn't give him anytime to recover.

Bad reviews here and on imdb but I liked, dunno why some hated it

Le Sulk

Hopefully they mention how he ended up at City and Bolton.
Barely touched on that. WBA glossed over too just to cover his anti semetic celebration.
In short, despite falling out with lots of clubs it was never his fault.
Having watched it reminded me how similar his career was to sturidge’s in terms of clubs played for.

Michael Owen playing for Fergie, and not turning out for england game would have made him even more likeable then he is now

Always think Lukaku will have the same career path. Couple of journey men clubs then top European sides.

His reaction to being subbed on 70 mins by Steve Clarke when it was 0-0 was mad. For me, it was that moment in the film when he revealed just how self absorbed he is.

umm, he rejects that

Good docs try to offer insights you wouldn't get elsewhere, warts and all.

This is just biased towards making him out to be the victim without really make you believe it.

You don't bounce around clubs after a season or two if you don't create problems.

Think you’re possibly right. I may be mistaken but iirc he played a game in March 2010 knowing he was having knee surgery after it. I don’t know if this worsened the condition but after that surgery Torres was never the same player. Similar to Owen his mobility was hampered. The Spanish FA rushing him back for the 2010 WC when he hadn’t played a minute of football in 3 months was lunacy...no surprise he was terrible in that tournament. Chelsea were rinsed as they forked out 50m on a different Torres (one of the few good games he had played post WC was against them, clearly they hadn’t looked at his other games).

Too many managers/governing bodies are so desperate to get a result today to save their own job they will jeopardise the long term health/career of an individual player. I’ve yet to see a greater dereliction of duty than what Houllier did to Owen. An 18 year old running flat out, playing nigh on every minute (England friendlies too). His hamstrings were in peril under this set up. Had a young Giggs been treated like that his career would also have been over by 27. Ironically, at precisely the same time as Owen was having his career ruined Gerrard was treated properly by being held back while he was still growing and his back issues were looked after.

I met him in Istanbul mate, while he was playing for Fenerbahce, decent bloke if you ask me

Yeah, his hamstrings and knees exploded and because they had Voronin and Robbie Keane as back up... The waiter played him whenever he could cos they were pap.

He was done by the time Chelsea came in for him. Which is why they couldn't wait to get rid.
