I like him, whats he done wrong to get the bad rep?

Excellent player and popular with most the other players so must mean somethink?

Good doc
Just a selfish get who walked out any club he went to and caused murder there.

Players like Evra, Henry, Wiltord, Pires and Petit all making an arse of themselves defending his 'genius'. Typical French flim-flam nonsense.

Wouldn’t mind seeing that one. Apparently his knee was a ticking time bomb, it was unstable and always going to go. His physical therapist describes his knee as “dancing” when he ran as the joint between the kneecap and the femur was unstable. His sudden burst of speed and his sharp change in direction put it under immense strain. He’d had spells out with it as early as PSV, then came the big one at Inter when the therapist states it “exploded..it was by his thigh”

His career really should have been over by late ‘99. It’s remarkable he still managed to have a quality career after that albeit not at the same level.

He remains the second best player I’ve seen after Messi.

BBC did a great doc about Zidane, Ronaldo, Beckham at the 98 World Cup (France '98 - The Three Musketeers: www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000kc1j via @bbciplayer)

Scratches the surface of Ronaldo

Wiltord wasnt even in it was he?

Yes, I think he was. Talking about Euro2000? Could be wrong, like.

I was amazed at thr story of Wenger begging him to stay when he'd left him out of the Arsenal team...and then going OTT about Anelka.

Saw it. Not a bad doc, though as you alluded to not much depth. The finish was good with the reversal of fortune for Zidane and Ronaldo (lesser extent Beckham...all he did was score a pen vs the Argies in ‘02 so not really a massive U turn).

I think a better one to focus on instead of Beckham would have been Owen. He had the world at his feet after that tournament...remember headlines of “50m to Lazio”. Within a year he had snapped his hamstring at Leeds, the surgery (which he states) was largely a failure in that ligaments were fused which restricted his running, and he was never the same player. He was never flat out after that, and rather than pick the ball up from midfield and run at people he largely became a player who operated in and around the penalty box. I maintain, had he played under Fergie, knowing how he looked after the similarly fragile hamstrings of Giggs by not overplaying him (pulling him out of every Wales friendly to boot), he’d have been in contention for the best player in the world. Houllier absolutely ruined him, playing him as he put his own need for results over the optimum long term physical health of the player.
