Andy Gray interview

I think we can get 6th place, go into Europe through the Inter-toto.
Hull's bubble will burst and they'll go on a bit of a streak. We aint hit a run of full form yet, which I hope we do go on after the Chelsea game. I also hope Moyes gets a few cheeky's in January.

5th spot is a big too far for us. We're inconsistant and even if Villa lose form, their goal difference and points margin so far is too large.

But I dont think they'll get 4th. They're gonna get injuries and I think Arsenal will splash out in January because they need Champions League to keep players at their club IMO.

5th is very possible if we keep up our form. Villa aren't anything special and they've also got the Uefa cup to deal with. O'Neil tends to use the same players so hopefully they'll get burn out like we did towards the end of last season.

We definatly need to get one or two players in January though, that is a must. Hopefully an extra wide player and a striker.

I can't see it myself, TB. Villa just seem too much away from us now. Plus, they are like us last season, and seem to have belief about their position. But I do think that we should consider 6th place ours for the taking. And one of the big 4 will win the FA cup, so 6th will get us into Europe anyway.

Is there an intertoto place for next season, or has the competition been axed?

No Intertoto next season, but i think we have been given an extra place to make up for it. The UEFA cup is getting re-branded next season and is getting a revamp, it will be more like the CL.

New format in 2009–10
From the 2009-10 season, the competition will be rebranded as the UEFA Europa League in a bid to increase the competition's profile. [2]

A new format for the UEFA Europa League will be introduced for the three-year cycle, starting in the 2009–10 season. The biggest change is that there will be a group stage with 12 groups of four teams (in a double round robin) instead of eight groups of five (in a single round robin). Apart from that, the qualification will change significantly.

Like the UEFA Cup, the Intertoto Cup will be folded into the UEFA Europa League, much like the Cup Winners' Cup had been in the late 1990s.

I'm not so sure mate, it was the same last season. They started off better than us and we eventually caught them up and finished above them.

They are only 6 points ahead of us which is only two wins. It all depends on whether we can keep out strikers fit though. If we do that then I think we've got a chance.

I'm made up Portsmouth have lost Lassana Diarra, he's there best player. I can't see them doing much now to be honest.

Didn't anyone else think there was a staggering lack of insight in that interview? Given he's an ex-player and an 'expert', his thoughts on the club and and the possible formations and what he thought of certain players were all that any fan with a reasonable knowledge of Premiership football could make about Everton.

Mick, thanks for that link. Note it says:

Associations ranked 7–9 in the UEFA coefficients will send the Cup winner and three other teams to the UEFA Europa League qualification, all other nations send a Cup winner and two other teams, except Liechtenstein, Andorra and San Marino, who will only send a Cup winner. Usually, the other teams will be the next highest ranked clubs in each domestic league after those participating in the Champions League, however France and England will most likely continue to use one spot for their League Cup winner. Additionally, three places in the first of four qualifying rounds are still reserved for Fair Play winners.

I make that 4 places up for grabs. Additionally, if a CL team wins both domestic cups, that would, or should, mean that positions 5-8th qualify for the UEFA. Anyway, at the very least (according to the above) places 5th and 6th will qualify.

Fair comment, mate. You could well be right and Villa are hardly pretenders to the CL, despite what the media portray. Arsenal will find their form again soon, perhaps after a couple of adjustments in January. I just feel that given the terrible form we had, and the blow to our strike force, that we'll struggle to make up that deficit (and goal difference) with Villa. But like I said above, 6th place should get us into the UEFA which is precisely what I hope we achieve this season. If we finish there, I'd say we'd had yet another successful Moyes campaign.

Given our problems and our woeful early season form, i would say top8 would be a massive achievement, somebody from behind us will make a late run tho, its not always about whats in front, we really need to start picking up wins @ Goodison and IMO we are 1 more injury away from season meltdown.

Agreed, 6th would be great for us. I'd be very happy with it.

Typical Andy Gray, I thought. He's been off about us for a few years now. I suppose this was the best they could get from him. I feel he just isn't that interested in Everton these days. It's a shame because he was one of my favourite players in the 80s (along with Heath).

He couldnt care less about us, that was proved many years ago when he was offered the Managers job and turned it down to stay with Sky. Or so the story goes............

Its confusing me!!!

Okay hypothetically then if the league finshed like this --

Champions League -
1st Chelsea
2nd Man Utd
3rd Liverpool
4th Arsenal
----------------------
Uefa Cup --
5th Villa
6th Everton
-----------------------
If top 4 win FA Cup or Carling Cup -
7th Hull
8th Pompey

The [Poor language removed].

He was fantastic to watch in the Kendall days, though. I always rated him above Sharpy (in fact people might remember Sharpy taking a bit too long to settle into the team)

Shame he is such a big tosser now. :D
