I do see that, but not really that often. It goes back to what I've been saying for awhile in that he can't be a good player if he isn't consistent. The best footballers are the ones who do the good stuff a lot. Andre does it sometimes but for me not quite enough.

Also if you're a transitional player you can't be a bottom five midfielder defensively in the entire league.

Seriously though, we have on the ball players better than him in the squad. I'd rather someone bring just solid, unspectacular effectiveness to that spot when we've got those guys doing the sexy stuff.

Gylfi gets dribbled past less and actually understands how to stand in between two opponents so they can't pass to each other.

Much like I don't think we've properly wrapped our heads around how bad Pickford is I also don't think we've as a collective fan base figured out how poor Gomes is defensively. Seemingly terrible options could turn out as improvements.

I just don't think Gomes' passing has justified the faults he has elsewhere thus far this season. I do think it could but he needs to bring so much more consistency.

I know you know that a central midfield player can't be a complete sieve defensively unless they're passing like prime Pirlo. You aren't going to say Gomes is that are you? Because I know people on here have in the past.

I know you told me to shove my stats but I've gone and looked at some anyway and let's just say all Andre has going for him so far this season is that it is a small sample size.

Just one perspective on things obviously but it is grim.

I want to like both of them but it’s actual player influence on a match I’m looking for. Calling out a pass here or there to the flanks Gomes has done is honestly irrelevant.. I would expect any player of championship standard to be able to do the same.

Gomes needs to do a heck of a lot more to earn his starting spot.

Does he? It looks a lot like Carlo has started him every time he is available.
