Poor man's Pirlo. He has an advanced understanding of passing angles. His ability to manipulate the ball ever so slightly so he can make a clean pass instead of just unloading it in the direction of an open teammate is a rare thing these days.

Pirlo-lite might have come across better. It was clear from the rest of your post that you weren’t criticising him though.

At one point during the first half he was directing Coleman all over the place, telling him to run inside instead of overlapping to free up Walcott out wide etc. It was wonderful to watch.

Grew into the game didn’t he? Thought he played well within himself in the early minutes as the game was so scrappy as individual duels played out, but he’s composed alright on the ball.

Saw a passing range that was much more than expansive than either Morgan or Davies if they have occupied a similar role in the team. Played a great ball to Digne on the touchine and crossfield passesto Coleman as well as intelligent balls behind their backline...we’ve lacked intelligence at times in our play from our centre midfield, especially at home against a packed back line.

There was a lot to like is what I’d say without getting carried away, I reckon he’ll say he can influence the game a lot more than what we saw today also...so looking forward to seeing him play again in a Blue shirt.

My thoughts exactly. He was neat and tidy first half, nothing more and nothing less. I reckon Marco encouraged him to be more adventurous at half time because in the second...phwoar!

Super debut that. Given they were his first minutes in the league and for a while, in general, I was really impressed.

He wasn't afraid to get stuck in, use his body and move the ball forward. I was also really impressed by his defensive contribution. Hopefully him and Gueye can strike up a good partnership.

Great baptism of fire in the PL. Can't get that much more physical than Palace so at least he now knows what its all about which will put him in good stead for future games.

That is now Richarlison, Bernard, Digne, Zoume and Gomes that have all slotted in well and improved us so only Mina left to see. Cracking transfer window. Carry on at this rate and we will be asking questions of the top 6 within a season or 2.

Really liked his performance today. He's only going to get better and more comfortable as well.

I remember seeing Arteta make is debut at Southampton, on loan from Spain. Like Gomes he lacked match fitness. However what was clear was he was an extremely intelligent (and classy) player as well as being able to handle the physicality of the league. As he got fitter and strong the continued to improve into one of the top players in the league.

I got the same sense from Gomes today as I did from Arteta's debut. I think he's probably a bit slower but a bit stronger, and that allied to the more cautious approach of Moyes compared to the attacking approach of Silva will make it unlikely he's moved to a wide position like Arteta was (albeit with lots of success).

Considering it's his first competitive game in about 5 months it's a very impressive debut. Made the game look very simple.

Was surprised how hard he was to knock off the ball.
