But set plays are part of the game surely? So why take them away. Look I'm not even a Gylfi fan he is far too passive, slow and he is a luxury player he doesn't play make enough in open play I agree. But he has been handy this season at times yes with set plays and assists, look at the ones in the cup and he knows the ten position in this league very well. I actually think Iwobi has skill but he would have to play in a team where everything goes through him also he would have to change his physique, as I say he runs awkwardly he doesn't find enough good crosses or passes for a player of 35million pounds. I look back at his Arsnal clips he looks physically a different player. He is another player from a big club who thinks he is better than he is in my view.
Teams separate themselves in open play. City and us have a similar number of set play goals. So I think those are worth taking out because for us to get better we need to be the best we can in open play. We haven't struggled to score from free kicks and corners when James and Digne take them instead.
The crossing thing is true, he's bad at crossing, but this is sort of why I think he's out of position. If he was in an area where he didn't have to cross we'd never even complain about it. The same thing happens with Holgate some when he's at fullback, but if Holgate was at CB where he belongs no one would worry about the crosses.
What I see in Iwobi is a good ball mover. He passes forward, he runs forward and in a team with good forwards he links up with them. Will he ever be a guy who produces a lot of goals and assists directly? My guess is probably not, and that is a legitimate problem, but we have guys in the team right now like DCL and Richarlison who pick up that part and not the stuff that Iwobi does. So for me Gylfi being another one who fits that category is really poor balance.
One last thing is that I decided to check on my comment about Doucoure's forward carrying and statistically he is way below Iwobi in how often he does it per 90 and that's with Iwobi in a position that makes it harder for him to do. It sounds crazy but Iwobi might be the player we need right now.
