LCAB has motivated me to write something about our greatest ever post war player.
I want to get rid of a couple of ghosts.
The news that The Man had been sold came as such a shock; from out of the blue, that gossip started to do the rounds.
Bally deserves the truth and not the lies that circulated round the city. The Kopites favourite was that he'd been run out of the city because he was into junior. A lot of Evertonians swore he had mounted up huge betting debts and John Moores had been forced to get rid of him.
Horse poo.
Take a couple of half facts and turn them into a story.
Like a lot of young men, Bally betted. That would have counted for nothing if Catterick had felt that there was still a job for him to do. But the Catt seemed to think that one of Bally's greatest attributes was on the wain: his engine.
Cut to the building of the new stand. It had to be self financing. Our greatest assett "needed" to be sold, our Chairman wanted pennies. Catterick (on the side) didn't want Bally going to Man Utd. & Arsenal come in with an offer.
And that was that.
December 22nd 1971. The day the music died.
