LCAB has motivated me to write something about our greatest ever post war player.

I want to get rid of a couple of ghosts.

The news that The Man had been sold came as such a shock; from out of the blue, that gossip started to do the rounds.

Bally deserves the truth and not the lies that circulated round the city. The Kopites favourite was that he'd been run out of the city because he was into junior. A lot of Evertonians swore he had mounted up huge betting debts and John Moores had been forced to get rid of him.

Horse poo.

Take a couple of half facts and turn them into a story.

Like a lot of young men, Bally betted. That would have counted for nothing if Catterick had felt that there was still a job for him to do. But the Catt seemed to think that one of Bally's greatest attributes was on the wain: his engine.

Cut to the building of the new stand. It had to be self financing. Our greatest assett "needed" to be sold, our Chairman wanted pennies. Catterick (on the side) didn't want Bally going to Man Utd. & Arsenal come in with an offer.

And that was that.

December 22nd 1971. The day the music died.

Did you get to watch Bally play?

I did, mate. Many, many games. Not an easy bloke to have on the pitch .... screamed at everyone (except Westy who would have bloody eaten him!!!). To much talk at the refs, and when he and Bremner were on the same pitch it was petrol and matches.

But oh my God. The man could play for the team like you wanted to lay for the team.

No question. No doubt. He was the Geatest Evertonian.

So did he play just behind Joe Royle did he? I've always imagined him to be similar type of player as Carlos Tevez only far better!

Alas I only saw him the once, and that was as a veteran in the warm-up to a testimonial, against Athletic Bilbao, only time I went in the 'arl Park End as well (we really did give the away fans the shabsest terrace in the ground).

He PLAYED EVERYWHERE , kid .

HE WAS BALLY !!! Winger , midfield . Last Everton midfielder to get 20 goals in a season , WORKED IT UP THE RS FOR FUN -Cause HE KNEW WE LOVED IT , SO ,...!!!

The MAN ROCKED . As A Player , As A MAN .

BALLY WAS THE BEST OF US .

Honest .

Where were you when you heard Kennedy had been shot and where were you when you heard Bally was sold? The news of both were just as earth shattering to an Evertonian of that vintage. I loved the man. My ultimate hero. I tried supporting The Arse for a time when Bally went. Couldn't keep it up for long. I've still got a 60's blue no.8 shirt. I couldn't afford the boots so I painted mine white. Turns out he did too. Met him several times after he retired, and a better bloke you couldn't find. I've still got his phone no. on my phone. Can't bring myself to delete it. He was only with us for 5 years but we were 'his' people. He loved the Blues fans with a passion. That's why his son Jimmy came to Goodison the weekend after he died despite being invited to many other venues.

The best player I ever saw in a Blue shirt. He would have died for us and we for him.

R.I.P. Mr Perpetual Motion.
