Alan Ball as a manager

He's still made a better and bigger contribution to Everton history, than the spanish snake oil salesman.Loads of great players, didn't do that great at management. So there's no shame there.

An opinion was asked about Ball as a manager, it was a factual and honest reply, but that is apparently the attention seeking one?

I remember reading an account from the man himself who said it was always difficult for him to understand why some people couldn't do what he asked of them, things he probably do in his sleep. His famous quote was "Some of these players can trap a ball further than I can kick it".

Some players are great, some managers are great, not many of either are great at both.

Nobody mentioned Martinez, but it's funny you bring him up. It shows the unrealistic level of animosity that was present towards him and his contributions, regardless of how you think he faired. We are on to our 3rd manager since he left, each has been given huge transfer kitty's to waste on keeping us performing average and playing dire football in doing so, and you probably still use Martinez free transfer signings as a stick to beat him with.

I posted the above before I had finished the above post. I meant add that I think Alan lost heart with the attitudes of plenty of the players he had under him, but being a great player rarely means that you will make a great manager, the opposite has been proved a few times, with Harry Catterick an average footballer becoming Everton’s best ever manager, in my opinion althoughI would add Howard Kendall was one who was an exception to the rule, being very good in both posts, again he only did the managers greatness at one club, luckily for us and never anywhere else.

In his book he seemed to be amazed with the demands and needs of the modern player, and that was back in his Southampton, Portsmouth days, the 90.

I don't think he'd be able to tolerate the current bunch.
He got the fire in his belly from his arl fella who was also a manager , He was not adverse to jumping into the crowd and giving fans a slap if they stepped out of line.
I would have loved Bally to manage us, who knows what he could have achieved? sometimes as a manager you just have to be at the right club.

Bally seemed OK managing Portsmouth and Southampton. I felt City was a bit too big for him. Average manager but what a wonderful player the day we sold him was the day we gave ground to the team over the park. Catterick had too much power and was deteriorating he did this to us, really sad all round 72-73
