'Bally' became one-third of the famous Holy Trinity in Harry Catterick's midfield along with Howard Kendall and Harvey. The trio were key figures in Everton's league triumph of 1969/70.

Ball was just 26 years old when he departed Goodison to sign for Arsenal for £220,000. He had recalled on many occasions that it was a decision taken largely out of his hands.

Later in life, he underlined his unique relationship with Everton by becoming Honorary President of the Everton Collection Charitable Trust, as well as being Honorary President of Everton’s fan club scheme.

The match at Goodison Park, supported by the FA and PFA, will follow a gala dinner held at Liverpool’s Crowne Plaza on Friday 6 October, where guests will be treated to a three-course meal, entertainment from ex-players and celebrities, plus a chance to re-live Ball’s final after dinner speech.

The evening will offer special auction prizes, including a chance to win a mascot place to lead England out at Wembley, VIP hospitality at an England fixture and memorabilia from some of the world's greatest players.

Gala dinners will also be held at Alan’s old clubs, Portsmouth (13 October), Arsenal (11 November) and Southampton (17 November).

The net proceeds from the testimonial match and four dinners will be going towards charities in four cities where Ball was fondly remembered. These include Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, The Countess Mountbatten Hospice in Southampton, The Oakley Waterman Foundation in Portsmouth and The Willow Foundation north of London in Hertfordshire.

Funds will also be distributed amongst the families of the England 1966 World Cup squad, including Alan’s family.
Jimmy Ball, Alan’s son said: “Losing both our parents at a young age turned our lives upside down and we are so pleased that Everton has agreed to host this match in honour of Dad.

“I know my Dad held all of his clubs close to his heart but Everton in particular was a special place for him. It seemed fitting to honour the 10 years since his passing with an incredible match, which we know he’ll be watching from above.

“He’ll be delighted his legacy is living on by helping four local charities and the families of his ’66 World Cup winning teammates.”

Tickets for game are priced at £15 for adults, £10 for concessions and £5 for Under-16s.

1969/70 season 3 games to go , 2 to win the league, at home v Chelsea , any nerves , Bally scored I think after 13 ? maybe 30 seconds , I was in the Park End with my Dad (57,000) , 90 secs later Howard made it 2-0 , at 5-0 we took our foot off the gas ended 5-2.
Three days later v West Brom (58,000) , Park End again , Bally was captain as Labone was injured , 2-0 (Harvey , Whittle) , the streets coming home , never forget that night , Champions , Champions ringing in my ears , happy days.
Kendall got the first after 14 seconds. Then Ball after 4 minutes!!! We were on fire!!
Then played Stoke away on the Monday won 1-0 (Whittle) then on the Wednesday the WBA clincher....!!! What a few days, what a team!!! Over 58k at each home game according to Everton results.

Funnily enough I had no memory of the Stoke game until I checked the scorers in the Chelsea game. Remembered Kendall's opener vividly but not the others so well.
I feel I can remember the WBA game like yesterday!! Celtic Leeds European Cup semi final highlights on the telly when we got in from the match, chips and cream soda!!! Harvey's goal was brilliant, twisting turning run and shot from distance into the park end....Nirvana!!

"Those were the days my friend"

Given what Neymar has just gone for what would Ball be worth today?I can remember how stunned I was when I caught a glimpse of a Daily Post headline that he's gone to Arsenal.
