@Armaghtoffee (and I'll tag in @Bluerover too).

That James Quinn book again:

Absolutely seething reading it. I knew vaguely the fate of Belfast Celtic and Derry City but not in detail. But the book really hammers the scumbags in the IFA and their historic sectarianism and petty mindedness...and I wouldn't say Quinn is coming at it from a nationalist perspective either. He's bending over backwards to be 'fair'.

Anyway, two extracts...one on the final act that shuts down Belfast Celtic and the other concerning Derry City getting shafted.

Going to get this book next week when I’m in Belfast.

NI football still has sectarian issues sadly. Windsor Park remains a most unwelcoming place for Nationalists.

Couple of chapter in it that deal with Irish football culture / footballer's in Scotland and England which were interesting too.

Overall it gives a very good account of the head winds football had with the GAA and their clout amongst the Irish political class post independence and the schism between nationalists / unionists; FAI / IFA.

Very well researched.

Always worth remembering that football isn’t the biggest sport in Ireland.

Great interview between James McClean and Paddy Kielty last night re the sectarianism he has suffered in England. Well worth a watch

Shocking what he puts up with.

He must dread the late October / early November period.

Lot more intelligent than the knuckle draggers who blight his life.

It’s a shame that he has no other international team mates adopting his poppy stance to take some of the pressure off him.
Yes mate.

He's spot on about being from where he's from and being asked to wear a symbol that many there consider an insult to their fallen.

Whatever your views on him (and I admire him I have to say) you cant deny that his attempt to put community above his own individual well being is anything less than admirable.

It actually is, the most played and popular sport. Just does not get the backing from the media or government funding, that though will soon change.

Big night tonight.. Rovers beat Shels - hard fought and Derry thrash UCD. 4 games left
Think Rovers have been hit and miss all season and am amazed how they are top. Big off season coming up, dont like the noise coming out from the club as regards funding and Bradleys future especially with Shelbourne and Derry going to really push on backed by major budgets.

No it isn’t. GAA is both the most viewed and participated. As for lack of funding centrally, soccer doesn’t do half the work GAA clubs do to raise their own money and then encourage funding.

Media coverage reflects the dominance of GAA as it is what people want to watch and read about.

Curious why you think this will change?

Not true, football is by far the most played sport, then its gaa football, then hurling. Football clubs do wonders at grass roots level and even now at LOI level for the funds they get compared to gaa. Football does not have many friends in high places unlike others. Dont know where you live but from where i am nobody has any interest in gaa sports, most prefer proper international sports that people around the world play and not these local sports that are irrelevent everywhere else and ever more even here.
