Ademola Lookman

I got a feeling a few bigger sides are going to regret not going in for this lad, we have done so well down the years with players from lower leagues, this could turn out to be the best yet. The video clips and pictures, he looks to be settling in fast, obviously confident in his own ability.

My thoughts entirely. Just got a hunch that he's going to be an awesome signing. Strangely, I can see him being like Michael Owen was when he first turned out for that shower across the park.

I haven't read the thread so dont know if anyone has made this point about Lookman earlier, but does anyone (from the clips seen of him) think he might be short of the sort of acceleration required to cut it in the PL? I've only just taken a look at this player and, though he undoubtedly has a trick or two on the ball, I dont see the type of blistering pace that would make him a menace to PL defenders. I also think he looks a little ponderous on the ball waiting for movement ahead of him and that would be punished at this level.

Last word I heard on him from Koeman was that he's one for the future. I can see what he means. But my concern is he's bought a player who might not have the pace or vision to succeed in the PL and that isn't going to change a lot with waiting.

I don't think you be sure about that. His pace is mentioned regularly in descriptions by football professionals (albeit those who work in lower leagues) but his low centre of gravity, strength and quick feet means he doesn't necessarily need blistering pace to get away from people. Proof is in the pudding

The clips i've seen of him you cant tell what kind of pace/acceleration hes got. Could do with seeing one from standing start into space where he doesnt try to cut in and another seeing him pure sprinting ! but dont think you can tell from the videos ive seen what its like to give e judgement ? supose as he's played so little and in lower leagues theres not much footage of him ! lets hope the kids got it !

...the point you make about dwelling on the ball might be rectified by playing with better footballers who make themselves available. Some of the Charlton fans say he overdoes it at times but I don't see that as a bad thing for a young lad playing with seasoned professionals as it illustrates his confidence and willingness to make things happen.

I'm puzzled by those descriptions. I've seen no evidence of great pace. I mean he's not slow, of course. But I wouldn't mark it out as a great strength as most of those scouting reports tend to do. As you say it IS his balance that jumps out at you watching him. That can make up for a lot. I just worry that at this level it's not going to trouble good defenders who wont commit as easily as Championship defenders do.

I couldn't see anything where he picks the ball up from deep and skins players. I know pace is not all about burning off the opposition from deep, but even over shorter distances I just dont see that injection of speed that takes a player away from opponents.

I tend to see a player who checks back a lot on his runs and shifts the ball from foot to foot, as though he cant decide whether to go one way or the other to shake off a defender. He's got talent, but he's very raw.

That's true. Quality of movement ahead is essential for a pass to become 'on'. He'll get that here, especially with Lukaku.

It's more the pace that is the issue - and the constant checking back. PL defenders wont be troubled by that.

..genuinely two footed is something I immediately noted when we were linked, the clip from USM FF yesterday showed him finishing with left and right foot. Great attribute to have, can take his full back on either side.
