I guess the flip side mate is that is he supposed to ignore these players just cause everyone is aware of them? His role is to map the future of the team and build a squad to challenge along with the manager. If for every Branthwaite there's a Doucoure, so be it. I'm relatively happy with Doucoure providing we still bring in Allan or another CM along with him.

Sure, but we'd be signing a 29 year old and a 27 year old for around £60m combined - one relegated from this league and the other only because Ancelotti knew about him because he managed him - after being stung repeatedly with terrible signings in this age range from players simply picking up a last big contract and dawdling their way through it a la Sigurdsson.

It just screams ineptitude to me. I don't see the point in Brands at this point.

Difference is Mikey Gana had a release clause in his Villa contract of £7m.

Hard to know what's going on with this...a quick glance at Twitter tells me:

He may or may not have agreed a 3-5 year contract and Watford have agreed a deal to sell him for £15m-£25m, but are also holding out for more believed to be £40m.

He is expected to join Allan or be a replacement for Allan after we've turned out attention elsewhere.

Ancelotti or Brands (or both) see him as a natural DM but possibly also an attacking goal threat from midfield.

Other clubs are either not mentioned or are monitoring the situation.

In a decent team with legs about him, I honestly think Gomes could be one of the best midfielders in this league.

But have him alongside Davies and Sigurdsson and he looks like he's stuck in treacle because the flaws in his game are exposed.

It's why we need a new midfield, but of all the ones we have, Gomes is comfortably the best of them.

So looks like we are definitely after two midfield signings, all believed Allan is one and looks like Doucoure is no 2 on the list after Höjbjerg .

I like Doucoure as it goes and am on record on here a long time saying so, have to say i wasnt impressed with him that much last season, bar a run of about 10 games before/after Xmas, looked like he lost his Mojo at Watford.

Full tilt though hes a beast.

Amazing how many people write off signings before they've even signed.

Clearly Doucoure isn't the most exciting player on the world. But did anyone see us this season?! He's comfortably more dynamic and higher quality than any of our existing options.

The only positive of this, (on the basis that it’s him and Allan, praying it is), is it means Carlo’s looking at a 4-3-3 next year
