soccer, which i believe was originated in this country as a shortened version of association football, same as footy.

Sure but we stopped using it. A lot of really bad ideas originated in this country. Like the slave trade or Liverpool football club. The improtant thing is that, within these hallowed isles at least, sense prevailed in the end.
