A Change in Strategy?

I think it is a bit of a change of focus, I think in previous seasons Moyes has been on the hunt for at least one genuine first team player or "Marquee Signing"
Where as now based on the signings we have made I think Moyes is trying to bring in good squad players (Mucha and Beckford) and players who he can mould (Gueye, Joao and Abdullayev).

If we keep our current first team squad I dont think we will make a "Marquee Signing", because we dont really have the money unless we sell someone.

my thinking also. Be interesting to see how Moyes changes his focus re: coaching, as he has always dealt with a nucleus of 20 players or so, not thirty odd. Many going on loan perhaps?

I see what you are saying, but virtually every law has unintended consequences. As you suggest these aren't the ones that the laws were intended to bring about, but in hindsight are entirely predictable. We must remember that in comparison to pure employment laws in the Eu and the UK football already exists in a strange bubble. Virtually any footballer could quite rightly challenge being kept to a contract, as in any other job, employees are free to move from any job on a week to week basis.

While we can only hope english football prospers (well the vaguely english and patriotic amongst us), I'm glad to see everton being proactive in exploiting any loopholes or opportunities these laws present.

It all depends on which hat your wearing mate, your club hat or your international hat, frankly i think the ease which this was agreed amongst the PL clubs had more to do with econmics then patritisom which you have to say is fair enough.

My point being that this and the maginilation this could bring about on the grounds of nationality and age coud be challenged but as Matt said there may be enough provosons made for the clubs to still have foregin players for everyone to remain happy, so there may not be a problem. But in a legal sense its very challengeable IMO.

It will be intresting to see how this bears fruit for us and its a test of Moyesys structures hes put in place through is tenure in building the club and also the talent of our scouting network. We should be seeing in a couple of years time wheather these lads can make an impact for us or not - i dont think we have ever had one foregin academy player ever break into the first team - which in this day and age is poor when you consider what Man U and Arsenal produce through theirs.

My good friend Cena said it in two paragraphs.

Liverpool wish they were us. The blerts.

Got a mate who is a RS supporter, normally takes the piss with us. But after speaking to him this week he genuienly feels we will finish above them this season. Went on about how good Moyes is at spotting talent and paying peanuts for players and develops them into really good players. By contrast they had Rafael buying players like Unsa, Lucas, Johnson, Aqualiani etc paying over the odds for average players. If only we could keep Piennar and Arteta and have a clean bill of health this season..........

As I said on the first page, I suspect that Everton are taking advantage 1. more of the extra resources and finances we have over previous years (wages and these signings)

and 2. remember the issue of compensation to players clubs leaving to join us below the age of 18? or trained at other clubs and at 18 joining us (its gone up recently Garbutt was an example).

3. And the fact that we can have unlimited U21 players (in the home grown rules)

- remember we have a large number of places we could fill already - with non EU non-academy players - someone mentioned 6 on another thread. SO this is much less an issue for us.

I also don't think Moyes is afraid of developing players himself - unlike some managers. Moyes is a manager who will put young players in to sink or swim - to aid their development.

I fully support this policy he runs at the club of developing players.

having said that, Moyes' focus has always been recruiting english players. Its only with a (presumably) extension of our scouting network that we are reaching further afield. Knowing Moyes ability at spotting latent talent, we could be in for a few bargains. Meanwhile the english side of our youth set up pisses over most of the premier league with perhaps the exception of west ham.

MOYES' BIG PLANS
5 December 2007

http://www.evertonfc.com/news/archive/moyes-big-plans.html

David Moyes has revealed he is expanding the Club's scouting network to help find the players capable of taking Everton to the next level.

The Blues' chief revealed his plans following the 128th AGM at Goodison Park on Tuesday night.

The manager addressed a gathering of more than 350 shareholders to reflect on the progress made in the last year and since his arrival at the Club in 2002.

He was keen to focus on an aspect of the Club he feels needs improving in order to help realise his ambition of bringing additional success to Everton.

He told the AGM: "When I took over here five years ago there were 10 players in the squad aged 30 or over. Now that number has come down to just four or five. They are very important members of our squad but the key for me when I came was to bring down the average age of the squad. That average age is now 25, which places us fifth or sixth in the Premier League. But I want us to get younger and I want to keep improving the squad.

"When I first arrived the aim was to stop the Club regularly finishing in the bottom six. The players I was buying were brought in with the intention of doing that by ensuring we were not in the bottom 10. We are now looking to bring in the players who will make us regulars in the top six.

"What I have done over the years is look primarily at the home nations for players. But what I am now doing is increase my scoutning network so we can look into a bigger pool to make sure we get the right players in to make sure we continue to improve.

"That doesn't mean we don't prefer to buy from our home land but we want the best players available and by increasing the scouting network hopefully we will see that bearing fruit in the future.

My good friend Bruce Wayne made a thread about it here back in 2007

Well i think that empahise was a nessacity rather then a choice given our past economic staus, as the club has progressed our turnover has increased meaning we can take on more wages and perhaps invest the odd million on a punt of foregin youth. Secondly i think Moyes through out the years earned the trust of the club to put the sturctures in place from to bottom and build a club. I remember him a couple of years ago speaking of trying to put an international scouting system in place bemoaning the fact that domestic value was no longer value for money. Given that it now looks like we are bearing the fruits of all these labours - in theory anyhow. Though im thinking of Vidarrson and one or two others as well.

Or we could all say thanks to football manager for giving us their data base.

Damon lid, I reckon bold and italics with some rare underlining for exception points, brings sufficient emphasis to your posts man.

I'll let you keep the smilies too.

Top post Damo.

Top post Damo.

Don't thank me. Thank Moyes.

Especially if Silva lid and Gueye bang them in against the REDSHITE. And Beckford does the bizniz.

But you've got to say - compared to guarantees of 4th etc the only one spouting FACHTS was David Moyes.

AND THATS A FACHT

I agree that it will probably be challenged at some point, or if it doesnt work, the premierleague will vote on it and it will be scrapped.

Personnally I hope that it means we keep the best quality foreign players in the Premiership and have less of the mediocre foreign players and hopefully some young english and welsh players will be given a chance.

Or it may just mean that we end up with loads of foreign kids in the youth team and we have to start paying agents "administation" fees to get British passports for the latest Eqyptian superstar!!! :)

I found this link to the rules, if anyones interested:

I was thanking you for confirming what was a nascent memory; that Moyes was expanding his international scouting team.

Moyes has always had dignity and treated the supporters factually, even if the club has erred in this manner with regard to finances, politics etc.

Nice one anyways Matt. Lets hope we see those derby goals.
