If you can call a beer swilling fat bellied hairy assed darts player a sportsman, then I agree.

Doesn't matter what your physical features are, find me another sportsman who has been the best at what they do in the world and dominated that sport consistently for 20 plus years and is still the best.

No1 on this planet has dominated their sport as much as Phil Taylor has

How many darts players are there around the world? I can think of the likes of Federer, Woods, Schumacher, Armstrong, Phelps to name a few that have dominated their sport over the last decade with significantly more competition than Taylor.

He's exceptionally good at what he does but lets keep some perspective.

Darts is huge in the States, Canada, Australia and there are pockets of players in every other country in the world. An Indian guy unfortunatly got knocked out in the qualifying for the PDC World Championship. But us and the Dutch are the best at it and Taylor is the very very best.

Not everyone in the world gets to drive a formula 1 car so you could argue Schumacher never had any competition. You could say the same for Armstrong, not everyone in the world cycles everyday so he wouldn't have had competition either

Just because darts players don't run around for miles isn't there problem, so they shouldn't be seen as less of a sportsperson than a Federer or Woods. Fact is, that Taylor has dominated his sport like no one else has ever dominated theirs. He has won more titles in his sport than anyone has ever in their sport - there is no-one who can match his record - so for that reason, to me, he is the greatest sportsman in the world

I'll give you Schumacher but couldn't let that one pass :D Clearly commuting isn't the same as competing but the latest figures suggest around 1 million cycle journeys are done each day in Britain.

I generally ride endurance events and they typically attract around 1,000 riders per event, with the bigger ones in Europe getting around 20,000 amateurs competing. In terms of individual sports there are easily more cyclists than golfers or tennis players in Britain, and certainly more in Europe where it's much bigger than here.

Yeh perhaps i was wrong using Armstrong as an example there, and maybe being a bit flippant in my argument BW. Especially with the likes of Chris Hoy, British cycling in paticular is doing very well. But there are that many people entering darts tournaments and it is getting more and more popualr around the world - yet Taylor is still the best.

schumacher has raced the best in his field from senna right through to hamilton (next season).

he is brilliant. i'm not a fan but i am acknowledging his brilliance. remember schumacher raced sports cars before F1.

it is a cut throat field to compete in and to dominate like he did was just awesome.

schumacher was brilliant, although this man is the all time greatest. given a wet track and a level playing field for his far slower car, watch him go.

Yes, without doubt Taylor is very, very good at what he does.

He was brilliant, but his record in his sport is still nothing to what Taylor has done in his. Just my opinion, if a tennis player or someone won as many world titles as The Power has, people would roll the red carpet out, but because Taylor is involved in a sport which is stereotypically seen as a fat man's alcoholic sport were you don't run for miles on end he will never get the same recognition
