"Denial is a defense mechanism postulated by Sigmund Freud, in which a person is faced with a fact that is too uncomfortable to accept and rejects it instead, insisting that it is not true despite what may be overwhelming evidence."

So it's fine to be pesimistic and down as a knee jerk reaction to a loss but not as a thoughtful considered opinion on our chances?

I didn't say it was or wasn't fine. I was simply pointing out that a statement made in the heat of the moment does not necessarily reflect one's considered opinion.

On the other hand there are people in here insisting we won't get 4th and saying it's a fact when we've just won three games on the bounce one of which was against the champions, and two of the three teams directly above us have dropped points.

It's really OK to admit you may have once been wrong about something mate. Especially when it's as trivial as an opinion on a possible football scenario which in the great scheme of things means absolutely nothing.

As you get older you'll find that you have to do this on an increasingly regular basis.

I'm not wrong unfortunately.
