3 issues to be addressed

Has anyone else noticed that we seem to be losing possession alot from our own throw in's. I've been keeping half an eye on it in recent games, there's nobody really moving into positions that allow them to get the ball, opposition players are putting pressure on and we end up losing it.

All good points made by the OP. We are still very much a squad that is coming together and the 3 areas of concern outlined in this thread I think will require new personnel in addressing.

I think Gomes is particularly a big problem at the moment. He doesn't pass forwards nearly as much as he should do and he's ridiculously easy for the opposition to run past and run off. Davies in recent weeks has shown a lot more than Andre and i hope that we will be able to play a midfield 3 of Allan, Doucoure and Davies consistently in the season run in.

I don't like Richarlison on the left as his dribbling and control aren't great so I'd like us to start games with him playing much closer to DcL from the first whistle. We seem to only put the two up together when we are chasing goals.

A powerful right-back with great athletic quality and good delivery, a ball-carrying centre midfielder and a fast, versatile attacker need to be our priorities in the summer.

I’m sure
@Zatara
@Nymzee
And others will have ideas
Sorry for this being a bit long winded

But in the modern game, you come up
Against 2 systemHgh press, usually the better teams. Or a low block. In both systems your defenders, full backs and sitting midfielders see a lot of the ball.

You can try and play long to beat the press against the good sides, but most of time you will lose the ball and they will come straight back at you.

So long term you need technically very good players all over the pitch, and like some have mentioned pace, power. Understanding their position. Gomes, Bernard and siggurdsson are all technically good. But lack Most of the other things to succeed, so over the next couple of windows. A quality RB. Another top CB, and two defensive/box to box midfielders. And obviously another forward, or two.

Ancelotti will not wont us to stay this defensive 30% possession based team, long term that will get us nowhere

Most of the time, it goes straight back to thrower and they lose it. Let’s hope this new rule comes in, of using your feet instead

Lack of movement up front forces us to go back. Or the forward pass needs to be played with such precision that only James can pull it off. When he ain’t on the pitch we tend to go backwards with the ball.
This.
There’s nothing more frustrating than seeing us work it up to the opponents penalty area, only for the move to stop and end up with Pickford!

We had a free kick last night 10 yard from the half way line, I was like just get Keane & Godfrey up their at get in and around their box. Bit of course was pass it around the back for 3 or 4 passes, before it goes back to Pickford who punts upfront anyway,
But obviously from much further back. Lands just inside Chelsea’s half and it’s easy to deal with

Looking at last night only Godfrey Allan and Ricarlison have the ability to drive 40-50 yards carrying the ball at pace
We need another 5/6 of those
You can only afford to carry one or two technical players without power and pace ( James and Digne ? )

Any team with Davies and Holgate as first choice is not going to be challenging for titles
Have to differ on that.

As part of a 3 man CB (with Digne and ?), imo Holgate is as good as anyone in the league in that role; very different from playing right back.
He'll come good. Its just he's being compared to possibly the best in Godfrey.

Davies is only getting better and his best years are ahead of him.
He's one of the few players who really look and try to play forward,
has now got the confidence to hold onto the ball longer and beat players in the most dangerous area of the field (huge in realising the potential of this team, something Sig and Gomes haven't been able to do) which was always a major doubt for me
his positioning is much much better and he's no longer Pickfordesk in charging in.
his passing and touch is as good as any of the other midfielders (cept JR)
reckon he's one of those players who has the ability to rise as the talent around him gets better,
he's much better for playing with Allan and Godfrey (he's finally getting the development he needs)
and think he'll be a top player by the time he takes over from Allan.
In the meantime, I think Davies and Allan can form a formidable partnership in the middle.

there's something about this team that needs not all its players brought in. there's a soul and spirit in this type of thing.
and players coming in need players like Holgate and Davies there, if they are good enough of course....which they are imo
Sure, we'll see

Its driven me mad for years so I don’t think it’s a new thing, to the point where I wonder whether it’s actually the norm. I don’t watch a huge amount of other teams to know, and have no idea if there’s a stat for this

another pet hate which is still happening is defenders heading to the opposition when they seem to have time to try pick out a teammate or even better take it in the chest and bring it down. On this one I do get the impression we are weaker than other teams

Watched the Leeds game last night and one thing that stands out is that when they have a throw in they have at least 3 players constantly moving and giving options........we seem to stand around waiting for the ball before it's inevitably thrown 'down the line' and possession lost.

I disagree about holgate,
Not good enough as a CB in a 2. So only worth keeping if we play a 3.

useless at RB and is very average technically. When Coleman is a better option at RB you know you’ve got problems

Its been difficult in that role, but reckon he'll be a better CB for it.

If we are raising minor issues - why don’t we try and keep possession from kick off.

We pass it back to Mina or Godfrey, they control it and then Keane launches it for a 50/50 header on the touch line.
