2026 FIFA World Cup - General Chat

Gabriel Clarke is international tournaments for me

His voiceover on pre-match stuff is unrivalled
He certainly has his niche.

I like Gabriel, going a long time now - at least since 1994.

Another one who has grown on me over the years is Steve Wilson. He's definitely the sound of modern summer tournaments for me now. Mowbray is too overwrought, Wilson nicely excitable. I like his ethusiasm and he has a good voice for it, which is always the main prerequisite.

Second game I’m watching. First game South Africa looked one of the worst teams I’ve seen in a World Cup. Now Qatar are matching them. The expanded format needs looking at for next time. It won’t be. But should be.

See I still like Guy but Steve is definitely one of the best. In fact BBC again have the better line up of commentators for tournaments with Guy, Steve, Steve Bower, Jonathan Pearce, Steven Wyeth, Robyn Cowen and Liam McLeod compared to ITV who have had to bring in Jon Champion and Joe Speight otherwise every game would have had to be split between Matterface and Seb Hutchison (who btw I rate)

I cant warm to it. Its that same vibe i got in 1994. "Soccer" and hot dogs feel in american football stadiums.
Obviously the KO times are killing it for european audiences. But it just feels to American. Franchise football.
And that introduction of the VAR team is cringe. Its like they're showing a nation before the eurovision song contest.
Might grow on me. Doubt it though.

I'm hoping tonight's Brazil match kicks it off properly.
