Why was the crowd there on Jan 6 as opposed to Jan 5 or Jan 7? Because that's when Pence was supposed to certify the vote.

Trump pressured Pence to discard legitimate votes in favour of fraudulent ones to maintain his presidency, even publicly tweeting about the strategy. When the crowd stormed the Capitol, he failed to intervene, likely viewing the chaos as beneficial to his agenda + attempt to pressure Pence to accept the fake electors instead of the lawful electors
