Exactly right. It needs to redefine itself and it's position on the political spectrum. It also desperately needs to sort it's PR out.
As the biggest single failing of the Labour Party in that election and the 5 years that preceded it, was their complete failure to challenge the completely false claims by the Tories about the state of the economy at the time they took office, in ration to the cause.
The Tories had not objected to any Labour spending pre the crash and the crash wasn't their fault, however the Tories spun the crash into a Labour overseen disaster and the Labour Party came back with knack all. They also completely failed to remind the electorate that the party who were the ones we can supposedly trust with the economy had overseen a double dip recession.
At the end of the day, Labour repeatedly shot themselves in the foot.
1) They just cannot resit gimmicks such as Kinnocks triumphalist rally in Sheffield pre-election and now this ridiculous "Ed Stone".
2) Unfortunately we are totally media dominated and so the leader has to be photogenic and generally not weird.
3) They underestimated the fear SNP would generate in English voters and they should have been absolute on no power share for SNP but of course Labour wanted power so it was always going to do some deal if that was possible in order to form a Government
4) They presented too sanitised a campaign that looked stage managed. Towards the end Cameron took off his tie, rolled up his sleeves and started haranguing his audience. EM did nothing of the sort & so came over as dull.
5) EM & Russell Brand ....... oh dear
6) Jobs are now available and more people are in work so why risk rocking the boat with a tax & spend or borrow & spend policy that Labour were proposing with SNP egging them on to spend ever more?
It's going to be a long road back for Labour now that Scotland has turned against them and if the Tories push through boundary changes, it could be even longer.
