2013 January Transfer Window Thread

Sam Byram just signed a new deal I think so that one would be a no go

Shame, as he has real potential.

I don't think we should worry about defence in this window.
Getting a striker could really improve our chances for top four.

We have the 3rd best defence in the league, they're doing a good enough job for now until the summer even with the lack of clean sheets.

I've been told Fer should sign tomorrow. Apparently we want at least one more player in, two if Heitinga goes.

Tell you what, I would like to ship Fellaini off in this window if it would free up funds (probably too late now). You know what I think? First game of the season, under the floodlights, sky are showing it, every journo is reporting on it, and it's Man U. And he plays a very effective game - fair enough, I'll give him his due, he played a blinder. Ever since then he's became the Everton poster boy in the eyes of the media. He's been living off that game ever since, as it's the one lasting impression other fans and lazy pundits will have of him, and repeat things enough and soon they become fact: everyone too busy fighting each other to get in the first 'In Praise of Fellaini' articles about how underrated he is, what a key component he is for Everton, how lucky they will be to keep him e.t.c e.t.c to actual form their own opinion. And who wants to do that anyway? I have been crucified for voicing my opinion on him because it happened to be negative. But really - how many games has he played well this season? How many defence splitting passes, good runs, good crosses, good flicks, good tackles, anything - how many do you remember? I remember his goals - I've always said he gets goals - but his overall contributions are negligible. Playing him in the hole is really ridiculous and sadly I can see that happening all too often with this new signing.

United
Villa
Newcastle
Swansea
QPR
Fulham
Arsenal

Not many.

I don't like to comment much but Royal Blue Jersey something is surely wrong with you and it is getting a bit annoying.

I know it is your opinion but when he is unanimously known as one of the best Everton players I can't see where you get your ideas from.

Kinda see where u are comin from here mate. Don't get me wrong I like felli and I don't want him to go but it seems as though he has gone from underrated to overrated on the back of that game! He is important to us at the mo with our lack of firepower an our only recognised forward stinking the gaff out but I don't think he is as pivotal as the media are making out! We did alright without him after he nutted shawcross didn't we? But on the other hand if he does leave then all this talkin him up should mean we get a premium price for him...

On my earlier post, It is Igor De Camargo from Borussia Moenchengladbach, not a Bayern Munich player, the tit told me the wrong club ffs. Fulham are definitely also in the running though. Sorry if I confused people. FFS I feel stupid.

Where was this self-awareness during all your other failed transfer sagas. No doubt the feeling will be fleeting, I'm sure you'll return on deadline day with fresh insider info. 100% genuine like.

He was praised for his continuous great performances, to act as if he was only getting recognition because of his performance against United is re-writing history completely.

What I'm saying is mate, that game had an affect on perception - people's first and strongest memories of Fellaini will be him terrorising Utd chesting everything down, winning every long ball, finding a teammate with practically every flick-on, and scoring. Now while he contined to do the latter fairly regularly, he has never come close to repeating any of the former. But if you see Fellaini's name on the scoresheet or indeed see MOTD highlights of his goal you'll assume he played like he did in the Utd game.
What I can't explain is the majority of our own fans. Fellaini has been just as incosistent this season, with many worse performances than good ones. Sometimes he has been truly abject, pretty sure against Sunderland (until he was moved back, scored and got an assist) and Spurs he was abysmal and in the Reading, Wigan, Leeds, Stoke games he either got riled up or just wasn't arsed. I mentioned being moved back, and he does improve, but I think defensively he is actually quite suspect. He doesn't track runners at all and I think it has left us open on occasions. He of course did have a really good run of form in about 2010 I think, he had even earned my admiration but was injured in the Derby and has never reproduced that form. He also had Arteta playing a blinder next to him allowing him to do the simple things effectively.

Tasked with a bit more responsibility he has never looked capable. I know Arteta got alot of criticism on here and elsewhere for being 'a crab' but he was so excellent the year before he even made Neville look good (http://www.grandoldteam.com/forum/threads/12115-I-love-Phil-Neville - on the subject of vaulting, I have found it can be most unkind. Found a 2007 thread wherein I said "5 English youngsters to give us the makings of an excellent side: "James Milner, David Nugent, David Bentley, Giles Barnes, Leighton Baines". 2/5 ain't bad, and I'd probably have Bentley. Other two dropped off the face of the earth). Fellaini when he returned from injury next to Arteta, then Fellaini with any of Neville/Heitinga/Rodwell/Cahill he has looked poor. That's the whole reason Moyes took him out of the central positions in the first place, because he was failing to influence the game.
So I know there is a good player in there in patches, certainly a useful player at the very least, and I would not argue we should get rid of him were it not for the massive premium he has accrued. It is the perfect time to cash in when his stock is highest because his contributions to the team are nowhere near the money we could get for him.
