Don’t think Baines was, I think Wigan had played a season or 2 in the Prem before we bought him although he was certainly seasoned in the Championship prior to that.

Pickford was similar to Dibling in that we bought him from a relegated team, also the case with Jagielka and Idrissa Gueye so that’s certainly a proven market for us.

Well if you want a recent case study look at Crystal Palace, Eze, Wharton and Olise just off the top of my head in recent years. All brilliant players, a trophy in the cabinet and massive fees for two of them so far with Wharton probably a year or two from the same.

No transfer strategy is without its risks but the Championship I think is one of the best proving grounds you could ask for.

it’s more the player than the league. All of those guys were young players who were youth internationals.

Guys like Cahill, Lescott etc that spend their career up until 24-25 then successfully transition to the PL are fewer. Especially these days with clubs like Chelsea who will buy anyone with a pulse and lease them to lower league clubs.
