Wingers are in the team to score and assist. I wasn’t aware that was a revolutionary opinion.
Well, it's not entirely true.
Certain people like to think that football is played with symmetrical teams. While hardly any good football teams are set up symmetrically.
Everton last season played with Ndiaye as a left winger. He's very limited when it comes to tracking back. It's so bad that he gets cred for even trying.
Ndiaye being limited defensively affects how the rest of the team is set up. Mykolenko can't be as offensive as our right full back. And in possession Branthwaite plays much wider than Tarkowski to provide extra cover.
As Tarkowski doesn't have the speed of Branthwaite he can't possibly give the same cover for the right side full back. Meaning the winger in front of the full back needs to do the job. It didn't matter if we played Harrison, Lindstrøm or McNeil, they never had the freedom to attack like Ndiaye did. Their role was much more defensive, they had to track back and defend. When Ndiaye were out on a wander and popped up in scoring positions, they had to stay wide.
The way we played, the left and right winger positions had very little in common. That's fine.
I guess we could recruit a new right side winger and try to play more balanced, but we can't be balanced without restricting and limiting Ndiaye's role. Can we afford that?
You can go through all the teams in the league and you'll struggle to find a team where both wingers have same profile, take up similar positions and share the same defensive responsibility. It is not something we should aim for.
That we play with a more defensive minded winger on the right to allow Ndiaye to shine isn't that different from Arsenal with Saka and Liverpool with Salah.
