Confirmed Signing Mark Travers

£4m on a back up keeper does seem an odd one when there's usually a load of that type floating round on a free. Hopefully it's a sign of an increased budget rather than a strange use of what we've got to play with.
Don’t think it’s that surprising. £4m is very very low risk in this age of football.

The other options are a free ageing keeper or a free/nominal fee young keeper with potential. Neither are usually good enough and the drop off ends up being huge.

This suggests we want a better quality squad and for me, is a very positive sign of the way business is being done and how the club is going to be run.

Is Mark Travers good enough? I'd say he's a lot closer to Angus Gunn or Fabianski than he is Jordan Pickford

I think it's quite surprising because I don't recall us ever paying money for a second choice keeper before. I posted that a week or so ago and only 2 names got put forward, 1 from 25 years ago and 1 from 40. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but it's definitely not 'normal' for us to do this.

It’s not normal. But then normal hasn’t worked for us recently.

Maybe something about him has flagged on the analytics side of things which show he is worth spending a little money on. Is still pretty young for a keeper.

I’d rather spend £4m on a back up keeper like Travers, than waste £10m of the kitty on a Sam Johnstone etc. God forbid, if Pickford does ever get injured, Travers may prove dependable enough to cover but if he’s not, we would absolutely go back into the market and sign a better one. Young, cheap keeper with fair amount of games under his belt, done well at Boro. Get him in and then move onto our proper business

Not seen Travers play before but I welcome competition for Pickford.

Was it under Carlo that he had a spell out with Olsen replacing him ? That seems to have really helped Pickford as he’s been much improved since.

Hoping we can get similar competition for other positions too eg left back…
