It’s a clause that is in favour of the player and means they have to sell if anyone makes a bid over that amount. Disclosing it means no one would ever bid higher.l which is not in Forest’s interest. I think there was a similar thing with Suarez and Arsenal a while back.

Yeah I thought that was weird, but doesn't sound like that sort of confidential clause is that uncommon. I guess if it's "we'll accept 60m or more but you have to keep it quiet" it's a compromise with more upside for the club, yeah they'll accept 60m but if clubs don't know that they might bid 70m.

Obviously you open the door to this sort of scenario where the buying club miraculously "guess" the correct amount.

Just throw a bid in of like £20mil and then up it by £1 increments until you meet the magic number. Easy peasy

Liverpool being Liverpool they refused to honour the clause and sold him for £35m more to Barca the year after.

The player can refuse to go even if the clause is met. Hence them sorting personal terms on the sly without permission to talk.

Think it was slightly different for Suarez, depending on who you believe. It wasn't a true release clause, only that he had to be informed of bids over the 40 million threshold.
