I think he’s harshly rated by many. Probably the natural response from a whole generation that idolised Leighton Baines but there’s so many full backs in the prem who are terrible defenders, even ones that have gone for big money. Mykolenko shuts down top wingers one on one, is positionally sound, loves the club and always gives 100%. His attacking is improving but will never be top class. He’s a good player in my view and we’ll have to pay a lot to get better.
Thats fair mate, its a tough gig following Baines and even Digne here - he will always be linked to the Rafael/Brands axis and people like their new dawns from eras.
I think he's been a great servant, whats often not acknowledged is the lack of support with strength in depth in his position hes been dealing with during his time at the club, for my money hes been playing at times, injured and fatigued - due to both the lack of that support and the role he plays as an Ambassador for Ukraine internationally with the national team - which is very important and used purposefully - hes played a lot of football in his time here.
Id also highlight the instability since hes been here in addition - thats true of all the players but i feel he is one who probably had to make the biggest transition culturally and had the most personal adversity. Id also highlight the club has been a basket case since being here and there has been huge pressure on the players with relegation and point deductions.
I think he's a good defensive full back one on one and hes a very good man marker - that adds to the squad and hes a welcome stay, in my opinion, if we offer him a new deal.
Im of the opinion also however that we have to build on top of all our players, Myko has been good over all, but can we improve and give him more support/competition - i think we can, i think we can more add dimensions and variance to both our full backs positions.
If he is happy to stay in the above context, id be very happy, but i think there is a market for him and Napoli had an interest in him last season. Hes also an easy win if we needed to do anything from a PSR point of view.
So one to watch in my opinion whether we stick or twist mate!
