2024/25 Jarrad Branthwaite

People forget as well that football careers aren’t long. He’s had 5 seasons with us in the first team making his debut under Carlo. He then came to prominence in the relegation run in under Lampard.

Now I actually think whilst it was good for his development the decision to loan him out in the 22/23 season was actually in retrospect absolutely crazy as Keane was basically on a one man mission to relegate us. We should have kept Branthwaite above Coady looking back. Imagine if we’d gone down and had a player of his calibre playing for someone else!

He’s then given us two seasons of playing every week in the first team and we’ve done absolutely nothing but sell all the good players around him,

He might give us another year if we’re lucky but wouldn’t shock me at all that he’s thinking he’s given us 5 years and wants to move on, make a load of money, get in the England team, and play CL football whilst he can.
All true. This is not about morals. It's a test of the Friedkins: can they convince him to stay or can they extract maximum value from his sale?

Either way, we are going to know all we need to know about these Texans very soon...

If we end up selling this guy before making any new signing (and yes charly doesn't count as we had to trigger the buy option) , coupled with the no show for the goodison farewell, would not be well received by the fanbase. Other than the change of manager, I am not overly impressed with the appointments to date.

If his sale meant we could turbo charge the rebuild this summer would people really complain? He’s going one way or another. I’d love to keep him another year sure, but if it’s the difference between adding a couple of players and then hitting the PSR buffer, or selling him, adding a replacement like Esteve and then having pretty much a blank cheque for key positions what would people prefer?

I trust Moyes to get centre back recruitment correct and it looks like in Tarkwoski and OBrien we have two good ones already. I’ve made peace with Branthwaite leaving at some point soon so it’s just a question of if the price is right. If someone reaches that number now and it eradicates PSR for us is that the worst outcome in the world?

He developed massively in his loan. He cost us goals under Carlo and Frank, was just a kid.

Keane cost us goals that season almost every game. I just think people look back on the loan as a good thing because we stayed up but had we gone down I think there would have been some serious questions asked of the club as to why they let go of a player that was good enough to play CL football for PSV and came back and started immediately for us in the first team.

Alternatively we may have got relegated playing a teenage central defender and it might have ruined his career at the same time.

Sending him out on loan was 100% the right move. He just wasn't quite ready yet under Lampard. The red card he picked up against Brentford was just a mistake due to inexperience.

He came back from that loan spell a far better player. He has been consistently extremely good ever since.

I’d have rather let Branthwaite make some mistakes and grow into the team than let Keane make mistakes every single week and still be a terrible centre back. All ifs and buts now though. Just annoys me that young players don’t always get a chance in case they ‘make a mistake’ whilst the likes of Keane Doucoure Harrison etc. can barely pass or control a football yet used to start most weeks.

Don't forget Angus Kinnear is involved now and remember the absolute rigamarole we had trying to get Gnonto out of Leeds.

Kinnear was the one who basically say pay the fee or leg it...He basically said you've got a contract and that's the end of it.
Exactly what i was going say spot on club is in a better position now aswell. Is the time for us not to be a pushover and stick to the figure we have and if they want him pay it or do one
