I think we have to temper our expectations of what kind of output a striker could bring. We have been starved with poor forward play for years, but the inverse of expecting peak Lukaku is unrealistic. Haaland has 21 on the year, the likes of Watkins, Cunha, Palmer at or under 15. Any of those names on the market would go for our entire transfer budget. The truth and likelihood is we are shooting well below that in expected goals.
I think we can split the difference. If we can find an under 23 striker we can expect 10 on the year but has potential to surpass that in years to come I think we would be approaching the market pragmatically. I think there's plenty of options like that across europe who wouldn't break 30 million in a transfer.
Domestically if the likes of United or Chelsea change course I personally think it's worth a discussion on the likes of Hojlund or Jackson. As prospects they still have merit with wages not comparable to the inflated transfer fees they came in on. Of course there's doubts but if those two clubs choose a new priority they may be willing to halve their asking price to simply clear the decks. Or construct favorable loan agreements that push off immediate allocation of transfer funds. I see a possible opportunity.
If we are more worried with the here and now I would start in TFG's backyard. Artem Dovbyk is as assuring of a readymade producer one could find. If TFG are looking for immediacy with us, I'm not sure they will find a better immediate option.
