Discussion & help on depression & mental health related issues

As someone who suffers from borderline personality disorder (however manages to have a broadly normal life through meds and past therapy) there’s something that feels horrific about most corners of the internet perpetually dehumanising me and people like me as if we’re all subhuman.

Any Reddit than deals with dating fails or “nice guys/girls” is stocked to the brim with people who despise people like me for simply existing and claim we’re all evil and it’s tiring. Makes it virtually impossible to speak about it with even my closest mates because I don’t know if they subscribe to this idea that I’m a monster

Rule no1 mate reddit is literally a gathering of virgins hiding behind faceless accounts

Take it with a pinch of salt

My girlfriend had BPD, I know how debilitating it can be. Don’t take the view that Reddit is the source of truth mate, there are people who are careful with it.

I had a long relationship with someone who had undiagnosed BPD and it was I must admit very challenging. That is not to say I was perfect either outside of that, and in hindsight definitely could've handled some situations better. We eventually split but stayed in contact. Her eventual diagnosis has helped her manage it a lot better, is happier in herself and she is/was by no means a 'monster'. Those dehumanising reddit commentators either never got beyond the difficulties to a deeper understanding or they couldn't be bothered. Some people moan about anyone who isn't perfectly fulfilling their wishes, especially these days, and someone with mental health issues is an easy target, with the added benefit of not having to confront their own flaws when they can blame it all on the other.
Speak to your closest mates about it, they may pleasantly suprise you.

My two best mates know about it, but I don’t speak about it a great deal.

Despite the fact that Reddit’s mostly filled with judgemental pretentious gimps, there’s still something deeply depressing about hundreds or thousands of people effectively saying who and people who have a similar condition to you are effectively subhuman though

Mate, you’re in the corner of the internet that welcomes you and looks to lift you up. You’re valued and surrounded by a community. Everyone in this world struggles and has all kinds of problems. The more places like this that exist and support each other, the more others feel they can open up and share their journey.

I would suggest avoiding places like Reddit when it comes to mental health issues. There are users on there who are legit. But the world is loaded with people who join those threads with the sole purpose of mocking and ridiculing people who are already vulnerable.

Yeah I think that’s wise mate - anyway, hopefully three points today will cheer everyone up

Dude get rid of reddit... Any of us could go on there and find hurtful comments about things in our lives that we have to deal with. I'd bet there is threads on reddit full of support for BPD, unfortunately some people get drawn to the negatives, if that's you then punt it.

With ref BPD. I've said this a number of times but I hope it's worth repeating. As with all diagnosis, people have may have been apportioned a diagnosis, be it depression psychosis eating disorders and mood disorders but our individuality means for example me as a professional will NEVER treat the diagnosis. I will treat the person. If they were all the same people would be prescribed to he same medication, the same therapeutic intervention recommended. But fortunately not the case. Being given a diagnosis can be helpful for professionals but it is NOT all encompassing. You are still a person, have feelings and think differently and ethically you can be "guided" by a number of psycho social factors. Such as your health, wealth, socio economic status, familial history. As a professional I have found subjectively that those who have an BPD diagnosis need long term support and as we all know, in today's climate it is not forthcoming. I will close by informing people that in order to get a BPD Diagnosis, you must be experiencing a minimum of 5 specific personality traits. On looking at these characteristics I found myself associating with a number of traits "that's me" "that's me". Personality Disorders are often amongst mental health professionals, a very contentious topic because so many of the characteristics needed for a diagnosis apply to so many of us, including myself. Mental Health is very very subjective isn't it? Professor Smith on the East Coast of America may be considered an "expert" on mental health and may be seen by many as an expert, however, his views may be in direct contrast to those held by Professor Jones who lives on the West Coast, who has the same experience and expertise. Mental Health is certainly not objective, and I for one have always subscribed to the patients and service users as the experts. Take care all.
