I was at the Blackburn v West Brom game the other day. Rovers are celebrating their 150th anniversary. Outstanding players from over the years have been awarded celebratory caps. The families of both Roy Vernon and Keith Newton were presented with the caps on the pitch at half time.
Didn’t Gerry Byrne play for most of the game with a badly injured arm ? No subs then. Maybe that’s when he got the injury. A season or two later Bobby Collins got a broken thigh playing against one of the Italian teams !

That’ll be in the FACup when he was still with Preston. Preston won that game on the way to the FACup Final in which Howard played. Big Ron was captaining Oxford.
An old pal of mine played directly against Jimmy for England schoolboys against Scotland schoolboys. He reckoned Jimmy was his toughest opponent. Willie Carlin was in the same England team.
He always was a strange guy. He put in a transfer request on the morning of the FA Cup final he was playing in and then declared himself fit to play. Only to break down after 5 minutes. No subs then so Rovers had to play with 10.5 players. When Dave Whelan broke his leg just before half time...
