I think in the 343 / 3421 we've been playing Gana and Onana COULD still work together as a 2, especially against the bigger teams. In that formation you have 5 attacking / creative players, the front three and also the 2 wing backs whose job is to get forward and get crosses in. So your 2 CMs can in theory be defensive ball-winners if their job is just to break up the play and re-cycle quickly to the wing backs or forward players.
You probably want to drop in a more creative player for one of the two against lesser sides, especially at home, where we're expected to make the play. That's why I'd also still be bringing in a Gilmour / Winks type on loan.

Not wholly sure that's not the plan mate, i had half assumed we would get Gilmour and thus have balance in passing - i think we are short on that now, we have Iwobi but not wholly convinced even with the upturn. Not sure where the creativity and progressive passing will come from through the centre. Whether its a 2 or 3.
Might be we are going to use, running, presence, engine and athleticism to progress the play.
