Sir Landon Of Donovan

You guys aren't looking bigger picture. Signing Donovan would be massive towards raising our profile and at the moment anything to raise our profile to a would be suitor would be excellent.

Oh and he can play a bit too ;-)

I dont buy that mate, there are loads of American players the world over Fulham had a raft at one stage. Even when Donovan came the last time we picked up pockets of support here and there - but didnt see any commercial spin off tbh.

I cant see a Everton/Donovan association making any difference to our revenue which is the point of raising our profile tbh.

Landon has taken a massive step back over the last few months. He's not nearly the player he was when he was last here, I fear (also I rhymed)

This isn't quite true. His national team form hasn't been his normal stellar level, but his club form has been just fine. He hasn't had a typical "banner" year, but I don't think it's a "massive step back." Do agree his 2009 form was better. But you make it sound like he's had an awful year when he hasn't.

The talk of him leaving at the end of this year's MLS season has started to pick up in the American press. And yes, Everton is candidate #1. Though bluefox seems to be in the know, and he says no. Then again, THT/LCAB have hinted at yes, so who knows?

There have been multiple articles in the American press refuting this. It's up to the club to maximize the marketing.

I won't go into the details as many Americans in this thread have argued it 100x over.

His loan fee was a reported three million mate for his last stint, add wages to that, i think its pretty impossible to have anything but a negative on the balance sheet.

And I have posted multiple times on here that that was a giant miss on the part of this club. Same goes for Tim Cahill in Australia.

Yeah after I heard we spent £3 million on a 12 week loan I didn't want us to ever get him on loan again. That's extortionate.

We will agree to differ mate, tbh i dont think that association would make a red cent - after costs.

Agree to disagree. :)

As a note, his sponsors (namely, Gatorade I believe) were rumored to have picked up a part of the cost, and would have done so in the future, so it wasn't a full $3 million.

Looks like he's on his way back on loan.

Didnt he sign with them after his loan with us? Pre World Cup?

No, he's worked with them for years. He's in a Gatorade ad from years ago.

EDIT: You made me go back and doublecheck for sure, and yes, there are links to him doing work with Gatorade in 2007 alone, and with the US team as exhibited in this ad from 2006:

HOLY CRAP. THT doesn't just post this stuff on a whim. Also backs up comments from September. Also backs up the building flurry of American press ruminating on this. (SoccerbyIves, MLS.com, Grant Wahl, ESPN's Mark Young...)

I really hope it's an extended loan - aka through May. Plenty of time for him to re-join the LA Galaxy at mid-season.

EDIT: Then again, this has fallen through before.

He does well out of personal sponsorship the lad a reported 10 mill a year, Nike, At&T, Gatoraide: would make you think he would want a significant proportion of image rights in contract negotiations. Or a reluctance to leave his core market.
