You said the takeover wasn't gonna happen. A few weeks later it did. Crackers how you can't just hold your hands up and say you called it wrong. It's not a crime, it's okay. Fair play for doubling down I suppose but this isn't PMQs, mate. lol
Quite why you and I are having this debate, I've absolutely no idea; but our last 38 games under Bruce were W9 D10 L19, which is bad enough - factor-in starting the new season with no wins in eight, and it's looking pretty hairy. Meanwhile playing truly abhorrent football with a half-fit squad full of rubbish players who'd completely given up on the manager. 19th in the table.
In what world is that 'comfortably safe'? Not to mention the two relegations we already suffered thanks to Ashley.
As for our prospects going forward, I've absolutely no idea, frankly. We might go down, such is the scale of damage left behind, but we might stay up. We might break the top six at some point in the next five years, we might not. I really don't know. We're an absolute state at the minute so Christ knows what the immediate path ahead leads to.
I genuinely enjoy the debate but, man, I find it absolutely mystifying how fans can have such extreme and steadfast opinions on the details of other clubs; like performances of the manager etc. I loved Benitez at Newcastle, but you tell me he's doing a bad job at Everton... Guess what, I totally friggin believe you! Why? Cos you watch all of Everton's games and I don't! How could I possibly know as well as you do? Meanwhile I'm being told I've got it all wrong re Ashley and Bruce. Eh? I've lived it for 14 years; surely there's a chance that there's some substance to my view on that?
Well we are having a debate because it is a forum.
As a point of order you are wrong. I said in 2019 and 2020 it was not going to happen, never mind happen imminently as most of the media seemed to be saying. I was proven completely correct. It didnt happen. At no point did I say it wouldnt happen and it did. That's just a lie.
I was proven correct, while most allegedly informed journalists were proven incorrect. It didnt happen in 2019 or 2020. They are the facts.
The PL had a change of heart. Nobody really saw that coming. But as soon as that occurred I stated the takeover had a chance of happening, which it did. So again, was proven correct. So let's stick to the events of we are going to discuss things eh?
As for Newcastle, you had a sluggish start, but you came 11th last season and would have pulled yourself out of it. You have been comfortably safe for years. Youd have been fine, Bruce knows the league and youd have regressed back to where you were under Ashley/Bruce.
You will finish a long way below that this season, so at least on the short term you are going backwards.
Re Benitez and Everton, you dont need to watch the games to see we are going backwards. We have gone from 59 points last season to way less this season. It's a simple numbers question. Numbers are objective. At present Ashley and Bruce will finish higher than Staveley and Howe, so they are not as good. Maybe in time they will get better.
As for yourselves, I broadly agree with your view. You might break the top 6, you might not. I just dont agree with the fatalism that this takeover makes you the new Manchester City. Sure it might do, but it may not. Youd have to do a lot more right, over a much longer period to get close to emulating them. In fairness though, you seem to grasp this, its more aimed at some of the wilder conclusions that are being drawn.
Having money is an advantage but it's not as much of an advantage. Lots of teams have money. Everton have lots of money. We have spent 500m to stand still, because it's been wasted signing lads who are in the mid/late 20s and upwards. It's how you spend it that matters, and 1st impressions are very underwhelming for me. Eddie Howe is an awful appointment by any measure, never mind a measure that puts Newcastle as some sort of super force.
As a final aside, just to come back on Trippier, I think you confuse objective and subjective. Objectively that level of money, for a 31 year old with no re sale value is a bad buy. But subjectively, given Newcastles specific circumstances, it could be a good buy.
