McGrath was a God on the football pitch. He read the game better than anyone. Imagine the player he could have been if he wasn't an alcoholic and didn't have dodgy knees. Sheedy was just class though. No disrespect to Everton but he was capable of playing at the highest level in football imo.

The story goes when Ferguson arrived at Utd, Whiteside, Robson and McGrath were all big drinking buddies and out most nights. He decided to keep one and ship the other two. Ferguson said later he got it wrong on McGrath and a huge regret not hanging onto him.

To be honest, Paul was never for changing, still isn’t, but a true unassuming gentleman, you can’t help but love him. Anyone whoever met will know what I mean. I could go on about him, but the man himself would be embarrassed.

He and Ferguson never would have seen eye to eye - funny I think Ferguson learned an awful lot from the above, he showed huge tolerrnce to special players with awkward personalities after, Cantona, Schmicheal, Keane etc.

Sheedy, Brady, Mc Grath in that order. I'll check it out 'finding Jack Charlton'

Oh you have me there, world class?

McGrath
Brady
Keane
Giles
Sheddy in that order.

Keane just shades Giles because I grew up watching Roy in Landsdowne. Giles was before my time. You had to watch Roy live to see how good he was.

McGrath was the best defender in the world for a time, that time included some serious defenders around especially in Italy in that great Milan team, Baresi etc.

Sheedy was class, just off world class for me.

Whos Sheddy??

We'll sign a few - best to egnore the pessimism everyones upset we have an ex Liverpool manager in the dugout.

Dumfries & McNeil the main names apparently in talks and the Nunes lad from Sporting Lisbon.

Will likely lose Rodriguez to Fund them but not that fussed as he's too injury prone and not suited to Benitez's system or Ancelotti's towards the end of last season truth be told when we have less of the ball than the opposition.

Players we've signed so far - Townsend on a free is decent replacement for Walcott - 5-6 assists last season will link up well with DCL. Gray for £1.5 million is also shrewd business - pace to burn and its a win win - he does well and buckles down then we have a bargain or if he does crap we can still likely sell for a profit.
Sigh...... Get a job on talkcrap lad

Wouldnt disagree with any of them just the order. As a kid the only players i idolised were Sheedy and Maradona. Sheedy edges it cos he played for us lol. No Super Stevie Geoghegan in your list though?????

Me too, I loved Sheedy because he played for us and played for us, what a wand he had. The others though were walking into any team anywhere in the world and just fitting right in and improving it.

Ive just never seen a better defender than McGrath, people talk about Bekenbaur, before my time, McGrath was imperious at his peak, it was just natural and easy for him, he defo has to be my no 1, though it’s tough company. He had this radar, right place right time - alo the time, I’ve never seen in game intelligence like his, his reading of the game was impeccable. The ball was just drawn to him. Pace, presesecne, heading, tackling he had it all he was a master. A joy to watch. He made his partners in central defense better as well. He radiated confidence. Won a couple of trophies at Villa they had no right to, almost the league as well, they threw it away. Think he won footballer of the year that year, when defenders never won it. World class.

Mark Lawernson deserves a shout, he was a class defender scuppered by injuries though. Steve Highway to, though never showed as much as he could for Ireland. Whealan on his day but injuries as well scuppered him.

Duff and Robbie were good players perhaps just behind the above with Sheeds.

All opinions mind.

Then there is Kevin Moran who deserves a special mention for being a class half back for those raised on songs and stories bagging a couple of All Ireland’s. lol

No disrespect, but at the time we were the best in the land and would have been the best in Europe. Sheedy was immense and to think Howard got his as a Kopite reject lol

McGrath was a solid defender but not as good as Ratcliffe. Apologies if you are just talking about Irish lads.

Sheedy in his pomp was as good as any left sided player in Eurpoe.
