What did he win with Inter Milan? I seem to recall he took over the champions and dominant team, and left them in about 8th place.
He won the Supercoppa and the Club World Cup.

Granted not the most prestigious of trophies but far more than we've achieved recently.

And you can pick holes in most managers records (Klopp, Wenger etc have relegated clubs). Finding a few failures does not invalidate his numerous successes.

  • Took treble-winning Inter to 6th, lost twice to Milan and was fired.
  • Takes a second-place Napoli (78 points) to 5th (63 points) and out of the Champions League in his 2 seasons in charge. Sarri came in and took them back to second the season after.
  • Garbage again at Real Madrid and doesn't last much longer than half-a-season, 4-0 loss at home in the Classico and fielded an ineligible player in the Copa del Rey to get them kicked out too.
  • Gets the same points total as Steve Bruce at Newcastle playing dirge football throughout.
  • Goes to China and embarrasses himself going without a home win.
And this is just the footballing reasons for my hatred of him. Great post summarised much more eloquently than I could manage

Yeah, and how many managers will tell their teams to "Just go out and enjoy yourselves"? pretty much every one.
Of course he sent them out with tactics and a formation, of course they were drilled. What an imbecilic accusation.

The only manager we've had where that was remotely true was Martinez, and even then he got so much else right. Everton's biggest mistake was not getting a specialised defensive coach in under him to organise and drill the defence better. With a more stable defence, that team could have been challenging for things.

Preseasons are meaningless. They are about fitness. Carlo had a terrible preseason last year and we won our first 8 matches when things kicked off for real.

Who defines what "better football" is? We were still in the hunt for Europe a few weeks away from the end of last season when we barely played anything approaching our first choice midfield all season. We will be nowhere near this a season with the downgrades to our squad and Manager.
We will struggle to finish in the top ten under this clown regardless of what he says in his press conferences FACHT!

Well being able to string two passes together is one thing!

We were never truly in the hunt for Europe - we just got lucky we had a purple patch at the seasons start mixed in with clubs like Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs all faltering early doors (RS & City also had bad patches at certain points).

I think personally we'll finish anywhere from 7th-12th which is more than acceptable having only spent £1.5 million.

And I'll also call it that the superior Carlo Ancelotti falls on his face and doesn't see next season with Real.

Ok so not really major trophies at all. Equivalent of the Charity Shield and the Florida Cup!

His record at Inter & Madrid was appalling, and winning an irrelevant competition (the club world cup) doesn't change it. The good news for us, is that they were the 2 biggest teams he had managed at the point he entered them (in terms of expectations) and our job is nothing akin to those. With clubs of our profile and standing, he has generally done quite well.

You could use that same measurement with Moyes though after us:

1. Dour at Utd and sacked
2. Dour in Spain and sacked
3. Relegated with Sunderland

But has just gone to WHU, recruited well, stablised them and has them qualified for the Europa League breaking into the top 6.

Some managers just click at certain clubs - Im not saying he'll win us a trophy or anything but I certainly think he'll coach the players better than Ancelotti did, have us more fit/disciplined on the pitch and will have us in the mix for Europe IF backed in the window.

The reality is if he went tomorrow you're looking at Dunc or someone like Howe out of work taking over which is worse than Benitez hence why it does nothing productive to make his job harder than it already is.

Does not bear thinking about.

I wonder though about Nuno Santes should we have pushed harder for him?

Which is why I said, not prestigious trophies. But once again, that's only a small portion of his career were talking about and you don't judge managers in such a way.
