If we're playing 4-3-3, and we should be, you can only play four wingers in a match realistically. We've got six right now. So we are just leaving two people to waste away. We'd have been fine with Richarlison, Iwobi, Rodriguez, Gordon and Gray.

That United game next week will be an early acid test of just where this current squad is up to on the eve of the new season.

We won't be signing a better creative midfielder than Rodriguez. We just need him to get up to speed.

Townsend has already shown more in two 45 minute run outs than Iwobi has shown in 2 seasons

Gordon couldn’t even get into Preston’s team at times last season, needs more regular game time elsewhere

Until we sign an attacking right back, James needs to play behind the striker.

In a 4-2-3-1 with Gray & Townsend either side of him and Gbamin & Doucoure behind him, he’d thrive. Let everyone else in that midfield do his running for him and let him drift where he needs to when we’re in possession.

Barkley was sent back from loan twice, Harry Kane was a dog's dinner on loan,
I wouldn't be reading into loans. Gordon has something about him that I like.

Yeah Gordon and Broadhead have both impressed in these two games; fast, direct, willing to run at defenders, but just lacking that end product at the moment.

Some time on the training pitch with Benitez could resolve that though; interesting to hear Gray talking about the “details” he’s been given by Rafâ so far.
