I don’t mind trippier as a player and you’ve set out a reasonable case for getting him but don’t you think this team needs some lads who can get round the pitch a bit more. He’d feel a bit like some of the other signings - not bad players in and of themselves but not a good fit for the team as it currently is

The only positive would be that he'd guarantee - in theory - a certain level of quality, which we now need because we've left it so late to the point that we need whoever comes in to hit the ground running, and that's a lot of pressure.

Issue is, all it does is kick the can a bit down the road.

My issue with Tripper is that he doesn't tick the boxes re having someone really dynamic on that side of the pitch which would allows us to let James play from the right at times. Perfectly decent player, but not at all what we need IMO

Definitely, agree about the energy. More speed in the team, more players who can carry the ball.

I agree mate.

Like I said, the only benefit is that he would in theory slot straight in, but we need power and athleticism there. He'd be 31 within a month of the season starting, it does nothing for us.

I don't have a problem with James playing from the right in a free role as he was early on in the season. To make that work though, you need a dynamic RB and to be able to play a higher line (hence the links to a new CB too).

If James is going to play centrally, I think we absolutely need a new midfielder (we would in a 433), but it would be Doucoure who drops out in that scenario as he seems to be much better as a box to box player in a 433 than he does as one of two holding players in a 4231
I think the best system for him would be at the tip of a diamond, but would need 2 midfielders to make that work. Or behind DCL/striker in 4231.

But again we would a need a top class defensive midfielder. A quality attacking RB And 2 wide players who have pace and score goals, so James can least have runners to hit

This summer the cost shouldn't be our concern. Its about getting the best players we can for the key positions.
I'm seriously concerned about next season if we continue with the same approach, and if throwing the cheque book at 4 players at 50m + a piece is the answer then we better do it.
RB, RW, CM, CF... (CM is like blinking ground hog day)..

Have to go:
Kean (only cos he doesn't want to be here)
Gomes
Bernard

There are more I would love to see depart but then the numbers in goes up (e.g. Iwobi)
Those three should fund at least one top player.

But if ancelotti is playing James right side next season. Personally I don’t think he will, because it effects the whole Balance of the team. It forces Richarlison to work harder on the left and really hurts us from an counter attacking point of view.

Then the argument wouid be to have a top class defensive RB. Not necessarily someone who’s a great attacking RB. Teams would definitely target us.

Liverpool get away with it, because salah does work harder than James. They have a hard working 3 man midfield that cover the full backs and obviously VVD. But we’ve seen this season take a couple of them players out. And they don’t look so solid. And team have definitely targeted their full backs this season

I think next season, instead of having 23/24 seasoned pros, if that what we want to call them. Ha ha

I’d rather have 17/18 and bring in the new under 23’s the 17 to 19yr olds to bulk out the squad. And just pray we do t have another injury crisis. I think missing Europe is not a disaster this season. As brands/ancelotti have so much work to do.

but I’d rather have one quality back up winger/forward on the bench, then iwobi, Bernard and king.
And again in midfield. Get another quality midfielder in and get rid of delph, Gomes & siggurdsson.

The hard part will be shifting the dross

Out:

Keane
Holgate
Delph
Davies
Iwobi
Bernard
Coleman

Bench:

Gomes
Sigurdsson
Richarlison

In:

RB x 2
CM x 2
CB x 2
RF / LF +1
ST x 2 (if Kean goes)

Trippier has been superb every time I've seen him this season for Atletico, I wouldn't mind that signing at all as long as the fee isn't silly

Yep.. a balanced youth/experienced approach is what I wish for every year.. I wasn't happy to see Godfrey come in for example (clearly in error) as wanted to see Branthwaite and Gibson be the back up. We need so much more class (with pace) in the side. If we not pushing kids I prefer the continuous improvement approach, spend more on less and make sure its a starter. So the current incumbent goes to the bench. That way the first team improves as does the bench.
It has been hard to do when we can't shift players but we time isn't on our side.
Personally I wouldn't touch any of our CB's and leave them in place for one more year. They take a lot of heat but its a tough job when we play with 35% possession to never make a mistake.

I don't see anyone in our youth stepping up next season though, besides Branthwaite (50/50 if he's ready), so not expecting anything from Carlo in this regard.
