ASTON VILLA owner Randy Lerner has been snubbed by THREE mangers – in just 12 hours.

Aston Villa’s billionaire boss’ plans to appoint a replacement for Gerard Houllier have been ripped to shreds by a succession of knock-backs, kick- started at lunchtime yesterday by Roberto Martinez.

His shock decision to remain at Wigan and not even travel to Birmingham to meet Lerner was blow number one. Villa’s search for their fifth manager in less than 12 months ran into two more dead ends yesterday with Everton’s David Moyes and Bolton’s Owen Coyle both snubbing the job.

Villa officials were left with egg on their faces after Martinez’s public refusal yet insist the club were not embarrassed.

The candidates have been dropping like flies all week. But any hopes of moving for Moyes or Coyle were also torpedoed.

Moyes is on holiday in Barbados, but has no intention of leaving Goodison to join a club which he feels is selling its best players.

Coyle was initially understood to be interested in the Villa vacancy and wanted the opportunity to talk to Lerner.

But he is not prepared to be only a back-up option after Martinez.

Villa’s rapidly shrinking list of possible candidates is now believed to include former Newcastle manager Chris Hughton and ex-Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri.

The club still insist they can make an appointment next week, and have not totally ruled out a return to Mark Hughes or Steve McClaren after previously snubbing them.

Hughes has refused to rule himself out of the running, despite Villa questioning the manner in which he walked out on Fulham.

But it would take some smart PR by Lerner to rescue a deal for the Welshman.

Villa believe they failed in the move for Martinez because of his special relationship with Wigan owner Dave Whelan.

And the 37-year-old backed up that belief when revealing the reasons behind his decision to stay at the DWStadium and sign an improved three-year contract.

“Over the last two years the chairman has been very supportive to me and loyal and now I feel I need to be loyal and supportive back to him,” said Martinez.

“I did not have to do too much to persuade him to stay. His loyalty to Wigan is there and his great loyalty to me is there,”said Whelan.

Who Moyes or the villa lid??

:P

Yeah, I banned him from above the wilderness of Alaska. The banhammer fell 37000 feet down, and all the way to Europe, in the middle of the med to smack him on the fod.

Good shooting Tex.

So then. Which manager do you think the FINANCIAL and OWNERSHIP SHAMBLES that is Villa - will be linked with next?

After the average villa fan realises they've no chance of Moyes.

Pardew or Holloway surely?

Only ones not yet been linked by their forums and "ITKs".

Its going to be funny next week seeing "Mystery Man" has deleted his twitter account etc

Yeah i see that mystery man say's that the Brum boss has put a big bet on himself to be villa boss, yeah as if he would know, and also say's this - Moyes is a 101% yes just a few thing got in way to slow down from outside football. But still v soon, He is ours. he just will not give in

Interesting. Given this and the overnight press stories Everton need to come out and dispel this if it's not true. It could affect Moyes' ability to persuade players (even the likely bargain basement players) that all is stable at the club.

The Daily Star said:
ASTON MARTINEZ? NOT WITH RANDY LERNER DRIVER

RANDY LERNER is used to getting it in the neck from his Cleveland Browns fans.

And Randy Lerner is in danger of suffering the same treatment at Villa Park.

No matter how hard Aston Villa’s PR machine tries to spin it, the decision of Roberto Martinez to turn down the manager’s job is one of the most embarrassing slaps in the face the club have suffered in decades.

...

Villa keep putting out official statements insisting they are determined to stay true to “heritage, competitiveness and passionate fan base”.

Yet Lerner appears to be making one gaffe after another in the search to bolster an investment which stands at close on £200m since he arrived in 2006.

The American’s decision to cross the pond and invest £65m to buy out Doug Ellis and take a shot at the Premier League in 2006 gave him a wonderful relief from the misery of watching his NFL franchise lose season after season.

....

Villa fans could not wait to see the back of the octogenarian Ellis five years ago, but in the last 12 months some of them may have cast envious glances back to the past in their darkest moments.

...

Villa have been through four bosses in less than 12 months – O’Neill, Kevin MacDonald, Houllier and Gary McAllister.

They appear no closer to naming a fifth after the debacle of the last few days.

The crass comments Villa made about the manner of Mark Hughes’ walk-out on Fulham was a foot-in-mouth episode, especially when they had not fully investigated the reasons for the resignation.

Carlo Ancelotti was “sounded out” and politely did not laugh.

Then Rafael Benitez was spoken to and was apparently keen, until he found out that the financial plans in place for squad building this summer did not meet his own lofty requirements.

Throw in Villa’s decision to cancel a scheduled interview with McClaren at less than 24 hours’ notice because they had “got their man” and it is little wonder that the credibility of Lerner and chief executive Paul Faulkner has taken a battering.

Villa are consoling themselves that they only missed out on Martinez because of his special relationship with Wigan owner Dave Whelan.

Perhaps they could have saved themselves embarrassment by finding that out first and scrubbing Martinez from the top of their list.

His decision was swiftly followed by clear rebuffs from David Moyes and Owen Coyle, who made it clear Villa would be wasting their time making an approach.

The word is going round other targets that Lerner is cutting back his financial commitments.

Gareth Barry has been sold. James Milner has been sold and Ashley Young will be joining the exodus in the next few days.

Brad Friedel has left for Tottenham, while Stewart Downing may be another on his way as he goes looking for Champions League football.

Before making another move, Lerner should make sure the Villa Park entrance sign is as clearly labelled as the exit

Ooooofffff.

Its almost as if the Ian Edwards, has been reading GrandOldTeam for the past 18 months lids!

Villa really have shot themselves in the foot over McLaren. He actually would have done a decent job there.

P.s. I will now use the term Bellwhiff on a daily basis because of this thread.
